How good are you at playing hands that should be folded?
By Timothy E. Daughters
This book was quite instructive, but I found it annoying how many hands I thought should have been folded before the flop, and Stewart agreed with me. Once we get that question right, what is the point in going on with the analysis?

I also found that the games that these hands came from were much more aggressive than the low-limit games that you find online. I don't think that these strategies are completely appropriate for those games. But, if you are playing for thousands at the Grosvenor Victoria, this is your handbook.

Still, in the end, I would say that it improved my game. Plus, there is very little written on the subject of Pot-Limit Omaha, so you are going to end up reading all three of those books, anyway.

A Thinking Man's Book
By J. Megill
This book consists of fifty quizzes based on real poker hands. Each of these hands Rueben either participated in or watched happened. For example, Rueben will say he was dealt KKQJ double suited in late position and the book quizzes you a.) fold b.) call c.) min raise d.) pot raise. Next the flop comes T93 rainbow and three players check to you. What do you do, the book asks, a.) check b.) small bet or c.) big bet? And so on until the river. At the end of each hand, Rueben explains what he thinks the correct decision is at each step, his rationale and what really went down. It is up to you to think about whether you agree or disagree with his decision making processes. This book is not a "how to play pot limit omaha" manual for beginners.

For the most part, I disagreed with his style of play. I thought he was overly aggressive. But you have to remember he has made a lot of money playing poker and I have only made a little.

wrong based on his plays. This is still a very good book to learn from but like the highest level books...holdem for advanced players , You MUST determine the intrinsic value of your hand for yourself as you will be the one playing in the casino. So read the quizes and take them for what they are worth. I labeled all the quizzes with a headline at the top after I wrote it. Some read MEANINGLESS ENTRY...nothing to be learned but this was maybe for 2 of the first 10. Take it for what it is worth...if you have the extra 13 bucks and want to improve your game I say go for it.

The Manchu Way: The Eight Banners and Ethnic Identity in Late Imperial China, by Mark C. Elliott

In 1644, the Manchus, a relatively unknown people inhabiting China’s rude northeastern frontier, overthrew the Ming, Asia’s mightiest rulers, and established the Qing dynasty, which endured to 1912. From this event arises one of Chinese history’s great conundrums: How did a barely literate alien people manage to remain in power for nearly 300 years over a highly cultured population that was vastly superior in number? This problem has fascinated scholars for almost a century, but until now no one has approached the question from the Manchu point of view.

This book, the first in any language to be based mainly on Manchu documents, supplies a radically new perspective on the formative period of the modern Chinese nation. Drawing on recent critical notions of ethnicity, the author explores the evolution of the “Eight Banners,” a unique Manchu system of social and military organization that was instrumental in the conquest of the Ming.

The author argues that as rulers of China the Manchu conquerors had to behave like Confucian monarchs, but that as a non-Han minority they faced other, more complex considerations as well. Their power derived not only from the acceptance of orthodox Chinese notions of legitimacy, but also, the author suggests, from Manchu “ethnic sovereignty,” which depended on the sustained coherence of the conquerors.

When, in the early 1700s, this coherence was threatened by rapid acculturation and the prospective loss of Manchu distinctiveness, the Qing court, always insecure, desperately urged its minions to uphold the traditions of an idealized “Manchu Way.” However, the author shows that it was not this appeal but rather the articulation of a broader identity grounded in the realities of Eight Banner life that succeeded in preserving Manchu ethnicity, and the Qing dynasty along with it, into the twentieth century.

Very Interesting
By R. Albin
This well written and very interesting book focuses on the role of Manchu ethnicity in the Qing Empire. Elliott addresses 2 major questions; was the maintenance of Manchu ethnicity important and what constituted Manchu ethnicity? The former question addresses the common idea that the Qing dynasty ruled China by becoming Sinicized. After a useful historiographic discussion laying out past discussions of this question, Elliott argues well that maintenance of the Manchu Banner system was a crucial, and even more important, perceived by the Imperial court to a crucial, prop of the Qing system. The Banners provided an important alternate channel for the court to govern China and maintaining the Manchu Banners as a ethnically segregated and in important respects privileged group provided the court with a group whose primary loyalty was to the Emperor. The court devoted considerable resources to dealing with the financial demands of the Banner system and the problem of acculturation of the Bannermen. The latter problem arose because of the wholesale migration of the Manchus and their Bannermen into China with the Qing conquest and their permanent residence within China. This raises the interesting issue of what was Manchu ethnicity. From the beginning of the conquest, this was partly the nature of the banner system and over time, as some other aspects of Manchu ethnicity, such as the Manchu language use, atrophied, the institutional aspects of the Banner system came to dominate the concept of Manchu ethnicity.

Elliott's analysis, based on a good deal of original scholarship in Manchu language documents, is quite convincing and casts a great deal of light on the nature of the Qing state and Qing society. My only complaint is that there may have been some missed opportunities in this book. It would have been very useful to have some comparative analysis. Elliott does mention the Ottoman Janissaries briefly but more extended comparisons of the Janissaries and the Mamluks would have been very interesting. In his discussions of Imperial efforts to maintain the "Manchu Way," Elliott points to the court's insistence on such traditional practices as horsemanship and archery skills. He never really mentions that there may have been pragmatic import to maintaining these skills. For much of the Qing period, the great military challenge, as it was for much of Chinese history, was from Inner Asia. Horse archer cavalry was a, perhaps the, key military instrument for warfare on the steppes. Finally, Elliott's narrative implies that the court's efforts to maintain Manchu ethnicity and the banner system contributed significantly to the military conservatism of the Qing state. An explicit discussion of this point (of which Elliott is aware - its mentioned in an endnote) would have been useful.

A Classic in Manchu Studies
By Wei-chieh Tsai
If you are interested in Manchu studies and ethnicity, don't miss this book. Dr. Elliott mainly used Manchu, Chinese, English, and Japanese source about the Qing (Ch'ing) eight banners system, and reviewed relative studies. He tried to combine the historical institution and Manchu ethnic identity in this ambitious research. Although Dr. Crossley also tried to discuss this issue, I just preferred Elliott's point of view -- "New Traditionalism." I recommend this book for readers of Manchu Studies, history, and anthropology.

Far From the Tree: Parents, Children and the Search for Identity, by Andrew Solomon

From the National Book Award–winning author of The Noonday Demon: An Atlas of Depression comes a monumental new work, a decade in the writing, about family. In Far from the Tree, Andrew Solomon tells the stories of parents who not only learn to deal with their exceptional children but also find profound meaning in doing so.

Solomon’s startling proposition is that diversity is what unites us all. He writes about families coping with deafness, dwarfism, Down syndrome, autism, schizophrenia, multiple severe disabilities, with children who are prodigies, who are conceived in rape, who become criminals, who are transgender. While each of these characteristics is potentially isolating, the experience of difference within families is universal, as are the triumphs of love Solomon documents in every chapter.

All parenting turns on a crucial question: to what extent parents should accept their children for who they are, and to what extent they should help them become their best selves. Drawing on forty thousand pages of interview transcripts with more than three hundred families, Solomon mines the eloquence of ordinary people facing extreme challenges. Whether considering prenatal screening for genetic disorders, cochlear implants for the deaf, or gender reassignment surgery for transgender people, Solomon narrates a universal struggle toward compassion. Many families grow closer through caring for a challenging child; most discover supportive communities of others similarly affected; some are inspired to become advocates and activists, celebrating the very conditions they once feared. Woven into their courageous and affirming stories is Solomon’s journey to accepting his own identity, which culminated in his midlife decision, influenced by this research, to become a parent.

Elegantly reported by a spectacularly original thinker, Far from the Tree explores themes of generosity, acceptance, and tolerance—all rooted in the insight that love can transcend every prejudice. This crucial and revelatory book expands our definition of what it is to be human.

Thoughtful and well-researched
By Greenbyoo
Far From the Tree is a TOME. I mean, it's a great big, heavy book in every sense of the word. To be honest, I was a little intimidated when my copy arrived! I didn't read it cover to cover, but started with the autism chapter because it was relevant to our family. I found it to be a very well-researched, sensitive look at how autism can affect a parent's life, hopes, and perceptions.

That chapter was so good, I moved to the crime chapter and stayed up way too late because I could not put it down. Thank you, Mr. Solomon for pointing out the absurdities in our justice system when it comes to dealing with juvenile crime. (And as for the reviewer who questioned including crime at all, this book focuses on any possible way that a child can turn out different than their parents expected, and being guilty of a crime definitely seems appropriate to me.) I learned a lot from this chapter, and was particularly fascinated by the Klebolds' story. Once again, Soloman wrote with sensitivity about a very difficult and controversial topic.

From there I read the chapter on dwarfism, and then finally turned to the first pages of the book and started reading the beginning! I wanted to learn about how families deal with a diagnosis of autism; instead I learned about how families deal with all kinds of unexpected outcomes, how resilient parents can be when faced with hardships, and how connected are the identities of parents and their children. As a parent, I understand the constant struggle to balance who we want our children to be and who they actually are. "There is no such thing as reproduction" may be my new mantra.

One more thing: in 700 pages (okay, I admit, I didn't read the Acknowledgments) I never found an example of "martyrdom" that one reviewer complained about. The book relates honest responses from parents in the trenches. Parenting isn't always fun, even for parents of kids who have no extra challenges. But Far From the Tree isn't a chronicle of long-suffering devastated parents; there are plenty of positive, hopeful, make-the-best-of-it moments as well.

It's a fascinating book for anyone interested in parenting, psychology, or the history of disability. Highly recommended.

Will resonate through your lifetime
By kestrel
A book he was born to write. This is a 900 page book, 700 of which are reading pages, the rest notes and index.
It is a rational and helpful thesis and there is research quoted. But most of the book is based upon very thorough and careful interviews which lead you to wonder about the depths of the mystery of being human and of consciousness, and about the depths of compassion that "ordinary" people develop when they have an "extraordinary" challenge. Yoga teachers are often saying, "Open your heart." Well, this book does.

Andrew Solomon is an excellent writer. Even with medical and forensic research information being shared, he is very clear. It is not always easy to read, emotionally or intellectually. Lots of concentration is required BUT that said, it is like going to grad school for pleasure....the deep pleasure of learning and thinking because you want to.

Even if our own challenges from our "vertical" family are just the average ones, the ability to perceive and validate "horizontal" identity in others is an important insight we all can work with....even with 'temporary' ones like "teenager.'

Every physician, every educator should "have to" read it. May it become an undergraduate classic. May many many people read it now out of interest and in the interest of awareness, of their neighbors challenges. If we are more open to understanding in these ways, we won't have so much to fear (and shun). This book deserves all its awards but more importantly it deserves to be widely read, and for a long time. May it be translated into many languages, so we all have another shared language to explore answers to the fundamental an important questions extraordinary people bring to the lives of families and communities.

Thank you Mr. Solomon, for your good work.

So you think you already know?
By Dave Shumway
Probably one of the most substantial and provocative books I have ever read! It's about people who have begotten "different" children and what those children are like. More importantly, it discusses at length what haveing those children does to the parents, sibs, economics, extended family and society in general. Slow read as I found myself haveing to put the book down and think about what I had just read. This author is always brilliant. Would strongly suggest his whole body of work.

An epic battle for the soul of India Between Dara Shikoh and Aurangzeb In 1658 the magnificent Mughal Empire was on the brink of a precipice. Though it was at the peak of its opulence, the escalating rivalry between Shah Jahan s eldest son Dara Shikoh and his third son Aurangzeb over the past two decades had split the family. Dara, the pampered prince, was a poet and philosopher who had to turn a soldier to combat his bitter but battle-hardened brother, The conflict between Dara s love of all religions and Aurangzeb s narrow Islamic beliefs was to make the battle much more than simply one for the throne. It became a series of battles for the very soul of India. The novel recounted by a eunuch intimate with all the princes, princesses and personages of the court, takes the reader through the magnificent royal palace into the harem, to royal hunts and to the kingdoms of rival and vassal rulers. Mubarak Ali, the narrator, fights in the armies of the rival princes and describes six exciting battles. His adventures take the reader from the limpid lakes of Kashmir to the deserts of Sind and the lush forests of every part of India. He tells a tale of high adventure, reckless courage, ruthless cunning, tender romance, treacherous betrayal and heart- Wrenching tragedy in a world of incredible luxury and decadence in what was once the richest empire of the world.

Foundations in Craniosacral Biodynamics, Volume Two: The Sentient Embryo, Tissue Intelligence, and Trauma Resolution, by Franklyn Sills

Foundations in Craniosacral Biodynamics presents a comprehensive grounding in the clinical skills needed in a biodynamic approach to craniosacral therapy. Author Franklyn Sills places particular emphasis on developing what he terms "perceptual skills," diagnostic skills that enable the practitioner to perceive the subtle sensations and intuitive insights that are the groundwork of most forms of holistic somatic therapy.

The biodynamic approach has its origins in the clinical exploration of W. G. Sutherland, DO, (1873-1954), the founder of osteopathy in the cranial field and "forefather of craniosacral therapy." In the last ten years of his life, his work changed from a biomechanical approach to a fully holistic orientation toward the ordering and enlivening forces present in the human system. Sutherland described his experiences of a mysterious presence, the "Breath of Life," from which ordering forces and healing intentions arose. His work then shifted from biomechanics to biodynamics; from analysis and motion-testing to an appreciation of the unfolding of the "inherent treatment plan." Sutherland encouraged practitioners to use no outside force whatsoever, but to allow the inherent ordering forces, which he called "potency," to make the decisions and do the work.

Franklyn Sills pioneered the biodynamic approach to craniosacral therapy outside the osteopathic profession. This approach has now spread around the world in various forms. Sills wrote the early books in this field, and this new book now brings the text up to date. Foundations in Craniosacral Therapy, Volume Two expands on the work described in the previous volume, starting with an overview of a biodynamic approach to craniosacral therapy, which emphasizes the suspensory nature of the human system. Here we review and deepen our understanding of the "three bodies"—the physical, fluid, and tidal bodies. We also review and expand upon the suspensory nature of the holistic shift—the physical body suspended in the fluid body, in turn suspended in the tidal body—within the context of the inherent treatment plan.

The following chapters of the book orient to our earliest life experiences—the embryonic period and the pre- and perinatal experience—with chapters devoted to birth, birth dynamics, and craniosacral approaches oriented both to birth trauma and to the tissue patterns it generates. Here we orient to the prenate and birthing infant as a sentient being having and responding to life experience. Further chapters orient to the primal/notochord midline and the tissue structures that form around it. We explore the dynamics of the pelvis, vertebral axis, cranial base, face and hard palate. Volume Two finishes with four important chapters on the neurophysiology of stress and trauma and related craniosacral and verbal skills. All chapters include appropriate biodynamic approaches to traumatization and CNS activation.

Review
“Holistic health pioneer Franklyn Sills continues to expand the frontier of his profound vision of healthcare in which healing comes from within the client, instead of from outside interventions. His ‘biodynamic concept’ is far-reaching in its implications, as well as eminently practical, safe, and effective for a long list of conditions.”
—John Chitty, director of the Colorado School of Energy Studies, Boulder, Colorado

“Franklyn Sills elegantly expresses the continuing shifts in our understanding of working with biodynamic forces. He elucidates the significance of birth work and embryology and how they are essential to the biodynamic approach. His work has changed the lives of students and clients alike and continues to foster a deeper understanding of the Breath of Life.”
—Mary Louise and Christopher Muller, LifeShapes Institute, Murrieta, California

“Foundations in Craniosacral Biodynamics, Volume 2 eloquently outlines Franklyn's pioneering thinking gleaned from many years of clinical practice and teaching. The book contains important new material about the scope of craniosacral practice, prenatal and birth dynamics, trauma and the stress response. It brings a clarity to these subjects with sensitivity, warmth, and deep insight. This is a work of love about the science and art of craniosacral biodynamics, providing an essential resource for all craniosacral practitioners and students."
—Michael Kern, craniosacral therapist, osteopath, director of the Craniosacral Therapy Educational Trust in London, and author of Wisdom in the Body: The Craniosacral Approach to Essential Health.

About the Author
Franklyn Sills is the co-director of the Karuna Institute, a teaching center offering trainings in Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy. Cherionna Menzam, PhD, a specialist in Pre- and Perinatal Psychology, contributed two chapters, "The Perinatal Paradigm" and "Attachment." Dominique Degranges (illustrator) directs the Da-Sein Institut of Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy in Winterthur, Switzerland.

Companion to The Crying of Lot 49, by J. Grant

The Crying of Lot 49 is Thomas Pynchon's most accessible work and perhaps the one most widely read and taught. Nonetheless, the novel poses many challenges with its impressive range of references to contemporary popular and material culture, history and geography, and slang and technical jargon.

This expanded and updated companion to the novel contains more than five hundred notes keyed to the 2006 Harper Perennial Modern Classics, the 1986 Harper Perennial Library, and the 1967 Bantam editions. The majority of notes are interpretive, although some are designed to provide a historical context or to recover the meaning of a reference that, over time, has proved ephemeral. This new edition adds quotations and paraphrases drawn from criticism published since 1994, thus adding more than seventy new entries to the list of works cited. More than fifty annotations have been added and some eighty annotations have been expanded.

Use with caution
By mrgrieves08
This little book written to provide insight into the myriad of Pynchon's obscure references and symbolic appellations in The Crying of Lot 49 is a worthwhile source of help if used with discretion and common sense. Although many of Grant's entries are useful to untangle some of Pynchon's more obscure references, others will simply lead you further down the path of confusion. The problem lies in the fact that while many of Grant's suggestions are useful, others simply bring about the same type of confusion that he is trying to address, since he often gives more than one possible explanation for each passage discussed. That is not to say that the book is not useful, it is, only that The Crying of Lot 49 by its very nature resists such means of explanation. But as reader of Pynchon already know, any help is welcome. As long as the reader keeps in mind that this book is meant only to introduce "possible meanings" and "complimentary facts", which may or may not correspond to what Pynchon actually has hidden in his words. Nonetheless a good source of info and a help to anyone exasperated by the twisting and turning of Pynchon's view of the postmodern world.

Not for a first-time reader, but good for the next
By D. Eigenvector
I would strongly encourage peopling reading The Crying of Lot 49 for the first time to NOT use this Companion. At best, it will only confuse because Grant clearly assumes that his readers are already familiar with the novel - odd but true is the fact that you need to have read the novel in order to understand the Companion! At worst, the Companion could ruin the experience of this wonderful novel since Grant freely discusses events from the end of the book early on in the Companion. This spoils the natural flow and discovery process.

Having said that, I used the Companion during my second reading of this novel and found it to be interesting and quite helpful in getting more out of the novel. Personally, I get the impression that the Companion is targeted for someone (like Grant) who teaches literature courses - it's jam packed with the kind of speculation, interpretation, and analysis that some people (often professors) love while others (often students) find distracting or pointless. For my tastes it goes overboard fairly often - a bloated discussion of the significance of a Tupperware party is but one of many possible examples. But that's OK since it's easy to skim or skip sections that aren't of interest.

I feel fortunate that I did not have the Companion when I first read The Crying of Lot 49, but equally fortunate that I did have it my second time through. Hey, learning the origin of the name Bloody Chiclitz is worth the price of the book alone.

An absolutely essential Lot 49 resource.
By J. Stokley Grimes (stokeberk@aol.com)
I conduct the Berkeley Pynchon reading-group, Berkeley Pynheads. I can say, without reservation, that Kerry's book is absolutely essential for gaining access to The Crying of Lot 49. As a bonus, it is an endlessly fascinating read in itself. It is like an encyclopedia of American arcana. Buy it.
