Decently Written But Lacking in Useful Features

This book is supposed to act like a guide. You're supposed to be able to start anywhere and get the info you need and move on (and that's how it's been assigned in my class) BUT it reads much better cover to cover because it isn't very good at telling you where a concept was previously covered. Another problem with this book is that it quizzes you on concepts at the ends of each chapter but the answers are no where so you don't know for sure that you got it. There is no solution manual to this book at all.

Best book out on this topic

This is the first book I have seen that takes a fairly stat-heavy approach to trading in-game tennis. It explains in detail the single most important concept in tennis betting -- relative hold and break percentages, which are used both pre-game and in-play for pricing. The author spends a great deal of time analyzing situations in-play that may have market inefficiencies. For example, how does a player do when facing a break-point at 0-40, compared to 0-30? Or how does a player's play change when up or down a set? It also gives a lot of practical tips on the execution of trading. This book gets a lot of things right. If you read, understand and apply the contents of this book, you are likely to win (and at least not lose) betting in-play tennis.

I have one criticism of the author's analysis. In many examples where stats are provided, the analysis is not robust. He does not consider how two samples he is comparing should be different in a vacuum. For example, the author defines a group of women's servers as "bad", and the group holds serve 56.6% of the time. When a bad server is serving to stay in a set (e.g., down 4-5) the serve hold rate drops to 54.9%. The author concludes that laying a bad server in such a situation may be advantageous. A better analysis would have estimated the bad server hold rate in that situation (given the player is down a game, that player on average is slightly worse than the opponent, and would be expected to have a slightly lower service hold rate for all games in the match, and not just that particular situation). This omission of conditional groups occurs throughout the entire book.

Despite my criticism of one methodological problem, this is well written and no other book out there comes close to covering this topic as well as this book. For those reasons, I gave it 5 stars.

Wish i liked it. The episodes between the mother and her children were quite a bit better than the rest of the book. But there was no plot to them. There is a lot of parts that serve only to show people behaving badly by conspiring against the mother. It was neither amusing nor instructive. I wish i could give this a better review.

Another good addition to the series. There's a lot to like about Career of Evil but, unfortunately, a few major shortcomings. Without spoiling anything, this time out our hero is trying to nab a serial killer with a taste for dismemberment. It might be one of three suspects Strike has a history with, or perhaps another unknown killer. The plot has been detailed by others at length, so I'll just offer some thoughts about the pluses and minuses:

The Good:
- Robin, one of the most interesting and likable characters JKR has ever created, co-stars in the novel and her identity is superbly defined
- Strike's backstory is addressed in more detail, and it's very compelling
- The settings are vividly depicted, with excellent descriptions of sites all over seedy and posh London and Northern England
- Heavy topics like rape, child abuse, and mental illness are thoughtfully considered and woven into the narrative without being overly preachy
- The relationship between Robin and Strike continues to develop in a complex, unpredictable way
- The dialog is consistently excellent and realistic
- Much less emphasis on Strike's disability, which plagued the last novel
- The reveal, unlike the first two novels, is not an endless explanatory monologue -- it's thankfully short and sweet
**These positives far outweigh the following negatives, definitely making Career of Evil a worthwhile read. Nevertheless...

The Bad:
- Many of the characters are one-dimensional. While Strike and Robin are increasingly depicted as complicated, multifaceted protagonists, most others are portrayed without any significant depth. The bad guys are REALLY bad; the victims are hopelessly innocent, others just occupy space. Some, like Matthew and Whittaker, are cartoonishly described and Detective Carver is, to put it bluntly, Vernon Dursely
- Someone needs to pluck up the courage and let the author know she needs an editor. The book is downright plodding at times.
- The basic premise of the plot is forced and improbable (BIID? Really?)
- Each chapter leads with lyrics from a Blue Oyster Cult song. These lines figure into the story (sort of), but this silly gimmick gets old fast
- The violence (and there is quite a lot) is gratuitously over the top, as if JKR is determined to identify herself as an adult writer
- The comic element featured in the first two novels is largely absent in the third

The Ugly:
- The book features intermittent passages shown from the killer's perspective which are eye-rollingly bad. I hate to say that but it's true. Think of every serial killer you've ever seen in a movie or read about in a book, and that's the stereotype you get -- right down to the killer's referring to a woman as "It" a la Buffalo Bill in Silence of the Lambs. These sections are so subpar, so cliched, and so unimaginative that it's hard to believe that JKR wrote them. I suppose they are included to give the narrative an additional angle but, rather than compliment the story's trajectory, they dumb it down.

Despite its drawbacks, Career of Evil is a very good read. Slow at times, but enjoyable. As said above, the positives outweigh the negatives. In particular, the maturing of Robin's and Strike's characters is a leap forward. I wouldn't be surprised if this book is regarded as the most popular one in the series so far, although the hyper-violent yet cliched serial killer may be off-putting to some.

A good story with a bad ending that leaves the reader ...

A good story with a bad ending that leaves the reader hanging and yearning for further development. I was reminded of certain TV series (Netflix), (Showtime), etc. where nothing is resolved at the end of the season because the series is going on for another season. Such a realization prevents my future interest in the Cameron Strike series, as it has now become predictable. Had Robin and Strike acted on the enhanced aspects of their relationship, had the development of Robin's character not ended with a thump when, unbenounced to Robin, Matthew blocks Strikes calls from Robin's phone while she is in the ladies' room, phone left behind; and Robin is never to know what was said on Strike's phone messages erased by Mathew. In fact it was so infuriating that such a strong character as Robin could end up being literally "duped," that rather than being goaded on to read further books, I was too disgusted by this conclusion to retain an interest in subject matters that will never be resolved. Almost as distressing was Strike's final actions as detective, solving this case in such a ridiculous, unprofessional manner, a scenario requiring more explanation and less guesswork. A far cry from Lulu Landrey; bad handling of an ending to a long story by a writer I would expect more from. I found the book suspenseful, it held my interest, but I was critical of the endless narrative of certain character and geographical descriptions. Realizing that certain issues will be addressed but not resolved in the next book has turned me off; I would read a sequel only if I had nothing else to read. Dangling a reader on a string can stimulate interest but in my case it worked in reverse.

An overall disappointing story.

Mr Galbraith's third book appears deadline-pressured. The plot has some good parts in the way it tries to focus on some of the more evil crimes committed in the society, but otherwise the story is generally weak. There is nothing so smart or exciting in the mystery solving as to make it necessary for Ms Rowling to write.

Separately, Cormoran-Robin's do-they-really-love-each-ther-or-not drags so much that one simply loses interest while the author exhibits his (?) own bind on which way to swing for the future of the series. If he makes them partners, he might not be able to use them as crime-solving partners without throwing in domestic issues. Yet, the good author does not want to disappoint the readers. This time around, the Hermione-Harry travesty is just too cumbersome for most to bother beyond a point. Cormoran Strike is no Ted Mosby (How I Met Your Mother) to keep the audience waiting for so long on his Robin.

The most disappointing aspect of the book is the actual suspense and resolution - just too straightforward and without a material twist for a book of the kind. There was no thrilling action sequence which is par for the Galbraith books but not the lack of a tale twist.

"Stay with me, good boy," I mumbled at Loki - my partner, my teammate, my best friend in this crazy war. I tried to hold my eyes open as long as I could, tried to keep scratching behind Loki's ears and speaking in my most comforting voice. I knew, I just knew that Loki could understand.

My lips kept moving even after I didn't have the strength to make any noise. I just repeated myself over and over, pleading for one thing, the thing I wanted more than anything in the nineteen years I'd been alive: "Stay with me, Loki," I told him. "Stay with me, Marine."

{My Thoughts} - Gus Dempsey joins the US Marine Corps. despite the fact his mother isn’t okay with it. It has a lot to do with his dad had been in the military and when he had come back home from fighting he and his mom fought a lot and then one day his dad just left, didn’t even say good-bye. His mom seemed to think that Gus was going to do the same thing that his dad had done or worse die in action and she wasn’t able to deal with those thoughts so she more or less resented his choices.

Gus had joined the Marine Corps to make a difference. To go to war and in the words of the book kill some dragons. Gus gets selected for a program that allows regular infantry men to become dog handlers. His superior believes that he would be a great candidate for that program. Gus also thinks he will be good for it because he loves dogs and have always enjoyed their company of that of the human population.

After Gus get to the place where he will train he is taught how to use his imagination. He learns that he is capable of more then he thought he ever could be, which in the military I believe is a common end result. Eventually he gets to meet his dog named Loki and they continue to train together. Once their training concluded everyone in their class is certified but Gus and Loki. They are called into the Superiors office and told they have orders to go right to war. This is when everything changes for Gus and Loki. They start to learn what it really means to rely on one another and how much they need each other just to survive.

If you want to learn about what happens while they are in Afghanistan you should read the book. I didn’t want to put it down at times and I love how it is so kid friendly and not all filled with military mumble jumble. It’s a well written book and well worth the read. I look forward to reading more books in this series in the future.

This was one of the best books about war I have ever read because it was so exciting and I never wanted to put it down! I hope Alexander London makes more great books about war and the dog's in it.
