Frustrated by traditional approaches to interpreting archeological remains, Spector, an anthropologist at the University of Minnesota, attempts a more culturally sensitive reading of a site in Minnesota occupied by the Wahpeton (a division of the Sioux) until the 1850s. Working closely with modern descendants of those earlier inhabitants, Spector examined various tasks of daily life to try to reconstruct gender roles in the culture. In this endeavor, the awl of the title, uncovered in the dig, becomes important both for what it is able to tell us about gender roles and as a metaphor for what Spector believes should be the methodology of anthropologists. The history and daily life of the Wahpetons is imaginatively reconstructed by the author from the bits and pieces discovered in the earth. She writes with an energy and enthusiasm that make interesting what could be academic and dull. Despite her sensitivity to Natives, or perhaps because of it, one cannot help but wonder if she, in the same way as her predecessors, has not looked into the mirror of the past and seen only a reflection of herself. Still this fascinating account should interest both scholar and lay reader alike. Photos not seen by PW.

This book is accessible to a wide audience as it explains practice and thinking in North American archaeology since the 1980's as it recounts the story of a dig. As Dr. Specter points out, much of academic archaeological writing is dry and full of tables and maps with little actual illumination of the lifeways of those who made the archaeological record. She actually brings one vanished Native American woman to "life" through a consideration of her awl, a leather working tool. It's not fiction, like Clan of the Cavebear, but a very plausible story of the relationship of this woman to her awl and how they fit into 19th century Sioux society. Another important aspect of this book is its explanation of the tension between the anthropological community and that of the Native peoples. This is extremely important in today's North American archaeology regarding Native sites.

Tracy E. Ore is currently an Assistant professor of Sociology and the Director of the Applied Sociology Program at Saint Cloud State University. She received her Ph.D. in Sociology at the University of Michigan. She serves as a consultant for multicultural education and curriculum to a variety of universities, organizations, and agencies and conducts workshops and trainings across the country related to issues of inequality. Her research areas include social inequality, race and ethnicity, and the development of effective teaching pedagogy.

College book, messages for everyone

I was required to read this book for one of my graduate classes and enjoyed the format and topics. The variety of authors and perspectives is interesting, and even though it talks down to the read in some of the section introductions, the overrall message becomes clear: the systems in place that support racism and bigotry are large and well supported, but you can still do something starting with your most important asset- you.

Multiple-Wife Households from the Perspective of African American Muslim Women

With Polygyny, author Debra Majeed provides a personal yet scholarly investigation into a practice that is not well understood for its complexity, its function within the African American Muslim community, and its relationship to family law within Islam as well as to the American legal system. Her crisp descriptive stories of Muslim women and their families associated with the practice are embedded in a philosophical perspective she identifies as Muslim womanism and in her ethnographic evidence from 2003 to 2013. Readers are introduced to a range of issues that are rich in texture, as they are the basis for examining women’s agency and authority in such marital relationships, religious prescriptions in the Qur’an, legal forms of legitimation for polygyny, Imam Mohammed’s teachings on polygyny, and psychological factors associated with the well being of women and children in multiple-wife marriages.

Throughout the well-crafted six chapters, Majeed stays focused on her intent “to encourage self-examination of Muslim American family life and promote closer attention to the welfare of African American communities, American families, and society as whole” (6). In the Afterword, she also provides practical suggestions that follow up on her intellectual exploration into the lives of her subjects. These suggestions include five recommendations: 1). engage in meaningful dialogue and education about forms of Islamic marriage within the context of the secular United States; 2). require local mosques and Islamic organizations to document marriage registrations; 3). state the relationship a wife envisions in marriage contracts and encourage families to seek advice from knowledgeable and respected community members, marriage therapists, and family law experts; 4). encourage first and potential subsequent wives to communicate with each other prior to any multiple-wife marriage; and 5). remove communal acceptance of marriage ceremonies that take place without a husband’s current wife (or wives) knowledge.

Of particular interest to this reader are the reasons that African American Muslim women enter into polygyny. For some it is a matter of recognizing that multiple-wife marriage is permissible based on the Qur’an and it ensures the survival of family (Sawdah); for some it is a way to be chaste and avoid bad situations (Zuhara); and for some it is a means to avoid unwanted attention and attain security, status, and honor (Lamisha). Significantly, for all the women in Majeed’s fictional performance in chapter two, the method of presentation allows her to use her informants, with whom she had multiple interviews, to discuss issues with each other and to communicate their thoughts about their life circumstances in their own words. In doing so, Majeed ably succeeds in her laudable intent to “link [her] intellectual explorations to practical applications that can benefit communities and subjects [she] stud[ied]” (133). The contributions Polygyny makes to scholarship and to praxis is that it demonstrates an inclusivity that Majeed envisions is needed to open up potential spaces for further examination and development on this topic. So that, while she neither promotes nor condones polygyny, she supports its decriminalization—a book on this topic is what I hope awaits her readers.

Audiences for this text include both readers wanting to understand choices available to African American Muslim women within a polygynist family and readers aspiring to understand with greater depth the historical, religious, and sociological context of this particular marital relationship.

The three teenagers found in a wooded Texas park suffered slow torture with a knife before dying. A usually implacable cop who arrived early on the scene, Truman Simons, was so shaken by the lonely, abandoned appearance of their naked bodies that he got down on his knees next to one of the girls and promised he would find her killer. But he wasn't part of the initial investigation, which exhausted all leads and was labeled "inactive" after just 52 days. Simons begged his superior to be allowed to investigate on his own, slowly tracked down a few pieces of the puzzle, then was asked to drop the case after a suspect he'd arrested was set free. He then did what few cops would do: he quit the police department, took a job as a jailer, and pursued the case on his free time, eventually forming an oddly intimate jailer-suspect relationship with one of the killers. Careless Whispers won the 1987 Edgar Award for best fact crime.

Award winning and you'll understand why

Kenneth Franks, Jill Montgomery, and Raylene Rice were three ordinary teenagers who had the misfortune to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and who paid for this mistake with their young lives.
Texas based true crime author Carlton Stowers weaves a sordid tale of mistaken identity, abuse, and sociopathology in this excellent tome about the tragic Lake Waco triple homicide in 1982, its investigation, and the shattered lives of the families of the three slain teenagers. I have read two other books written by Carlton Stowers, and I am amazed at the empathy he feels towards the victims of violent crime and their families; while not outwardly doing so, his stories are a constant reminder that a homicide leaves many victims other than the dead person.
"Careless Whispers" also serves as a reminder that heroes can come in unlikely packages. The hero of this case, if a story as dreadful as this can have a hero, is Waco policeman Truman Simons.
After a mere eight weeks, the investigation into these murders was shelved and effectively deemed unsolveable. But they weren't unsolveable, and if not for the dedication and persistence of Truman Simons, this crime would, in all likelihood, STILL be unavenged. Thankfully however, that is not the case.
A gripping, frightening and suspenseful book, this is a must read, and the pages within literally shriek "The horror! The horror!" And when you finish it, you'll feel like shrieking this phrase too.

A well worn copy

I first read this book at least 10 years ago, if not longer. I was so entranced I couldn't put it down. I've read the book at least a 1/2 dozen times since then. Each time I read it I find something new, a twist, or a turn that I missed the time before, which adds new dimension to the story.
Some reviewers see this book as being Biased. Biased at who? The murderers? The men that planned and partook in the slaughter of three innocent children? All of the men who were present at the time of the murders, as well as in the planning of the murders, have confessed during the years since the murders.
The officer who spent all his waking time tracking down the killers of these kids should be commended. The author should also be commended. The book does what a good true crime book is supposed to do: it points out all the aspects of the crime are, and who the guilty party(ies) are.
This is a must have for any true crime library!

Fascinating, disturbing, true - reads like a good mystery

First, let me say that I'm not generally a fan of mysteries, nor do I actively search out stories of violence or crime. I don't even like to read the newspaper. But "Careless Whispers" is haunting. It draws you in and doesn't let go, even after you're done with the book. It's a terrifying story of real people with real feelings and motivations. It's a heartbreaking tale of mistaken identity, and being in the wrong place at the wrong time. It demonstrates just how vulnerable ordinary people really are.
Carlton Stowers has a gift for story-telling. He candidly writes about his subject with an entertaining flair. If you can find this book, read it.
