"Out of the Box and onto Wall Street" is different from most finance related books. It is not only informational, but so original and entertaining. It is the perfect blend of theory and personal stories over the last few years of tumultuous market times. I highly recommend it and think it would make a great gift for any market follower!

COMPILATION OF OLD NEWSLETTERS

I recently bought and read this book hoping to get some solid insight into bond buying for individual investors. While if offered some insight into the heirarchy of investing for safety and capital preservation, you mostly had to glean that out of a series of newsletters he wrote for his professional investment clients. I think in essence, he just stapled together a bunch of old newsletters. I would like to have seen a chapter on bond investing, past, present and future. I assume Mr Grant is very successful but I fail to see how this book helps the average guy get ahead in the bond world. He tended to drone on about some federally backed preferred stock he bought for his mother and then the federal government wouldn't make good on the dividends. He attributed a quote to Abaham Lincoln on page 354 that was actually made by William J.H. Boetcker in 1916. I gave the book to the public library hoping someone, perhaps smarter than me, would get the benefit that I missed.

His daily market commentary displays a knowledge and understanding that only 38 years on Wall Street can, but his sense of humor is what makes his musings so original. This book is a "best of the best" of Mark's daily commentaries over the last few years and his foresight and interpretation of geopolitical and economic events is an invaluable, entertaining and educational read for any investor.

A must-read! Totally opened my eyes.

I re-purchased this book after realizing that it totally shifted the way I view the world when I first read it back in 2001. Even though it's from the 1980's, Angela Davis's words are still relevant, and especially illuminating for me, as a white woman. I just really loved and appreciated this book and am excited to read it again. I also remember reading "Ain't I A Woman?" by bell hooks at that time, and recommend reading the two in tandem. Great insights from two of this country's preeminent thinkers.

I read this book for my Women in Politics class.

This book's central focus is intersectional feminism. It highlights how gender, race, and class factor into inequality. This book started off incredibly strong, but lost its way a bit in the later chapters. However, still a fantastic and insightful book.

Best Book

I took Organic Chemistry once before with a different book and it was full of useless information and facts. This book gets straight to the point in an easy and concise way. GET THE ANSWER BOOK! It provides tons of small problem solving things that you don't notice in the book. I have learned so much more from this book then before. Everyone says O-chem is the devil, but really, I've enjoyed learning the subject (again).

Great Introduction to Organic

Organic Chemistry by Smith is a superb text for the introduction to the subject as it is taught today. I just finished using it in an OC class, having taken my first one some fifty years ago, using Morrison and Boyd. Clearly the subject matter and teaching technique has changed. Smith is a clear example of the current method of taking "bites" of Organic, hopefully chewable ones, and then detailing in each bit what elements can be used to develop the entire body of knowledge. Smith has a superb answer book which accompanies the text.

Smith progresses as do most of the other authors. I am familiar with Wade Organic Chemistry (7th Edition) and Klein Organic Chemistry as comparable texts. Wade has been used at MIT and Klein is new but his shorter books have been invaluable. Smith starts as do the others with a review of structures, acids and bases, and reactions.

As a weakness she presents the movement of electrons, namely movement of bonds and pairs, but it seems to be spread out and is not as unified as it could be. Klein on the other hand does a superb job at that.

She moves through alkanes, alcohols, alkenes, alkynes and then ringed structures and summarized incrementally the uses, naming, creation and reactions of each. Her presentation of SN, E and A reactions is standard as compared to other texts.

She presents a wealth of examples and the problems are extensive and work through the details extensively.

What I find different from fifty years ago is that reactions ate part of each chapter rather than the heart of each chapter, OC is cooking, it is not mathematics, there are no fundamental principles from which you can derive the results, just recipes, recipes which can be logically sown together into a fabric.

Thus for example if you have an ether and you end up with alkyl halides you just memorize the answer. Smith tries to provide the logic but the ultimate goal of seeing the forest for the trees is missing. She fails to show how this builds with alkyl halides, alcohols, ethers, ketones, esters going from one to another. The synthesis problem is somehow always an afterthought although the problem book does build on it. It would have been nice to see a build of key reactions going from one class to another and reactions where we add bonds, move OH elements and the like. Namely the tool kit we had half a century ago is missing at the expense of now watching details which albeit important, fail in my opinion to reveal the nature of Organic.

I am not a chemist and never wanted to be one. But it was of some importance from my perspective to regain a fluency in the subject. Smith is an excellent vehicle to do that. Having had Quantum Mechanics, Statistical Thermo, and written extensively in random process theory I also found the attempts to describe the Phys Chem elements as light but given the audience it is the best one can do.

Let me give two examples from the middle of the text. Chapter 12 deals with oxidation-reduction reactions. This is classic OC, just remember the recipe. The chapter is just a collection of cook book facts with the window dressing of explaining them by moving electrons. Unless you know the answer there is no way ever to derive it. This is not math. However Chapter 14 is NMR. Having spent a few decades dealing with MRI and understanding it from several perspectives, give the spin quantum issues, this is one of the best technique explanations of NMR I have ever seen. It explains the technique, not the theory, but it explains it to the level of giving the chemist a tool to work with. This chapter alone is worth the price of the book.

The answer book is superb. It goes thru thousands of well structured and worked out questions all leading to a better understanding.

Overall Smith has done a brilliant job of explaining the current state of Organic for a new learner. In addition I found barely a few minor errors which is amazing for such a complex effort. This text is definitely worth using.

As a student I find this text one of the best I have ever used. The easy to follow bulleted information format theme throughout the book is extremely helpful both in learning the material and studying for a test. Its beautiful cover, clean molecular graphics, and relevant aside images create a pleasant aesthetic that transfers to the material and enhances the learning process. Visualization is so important for organic chemistry and beautifully presented here. Chapter and page layouts make sense and are easy to follow as new subjects are presented. If you are a professor I would recommend you start using this text book to teach your O-Chem course, your students will benefit from it.

Her research and publications address conceptual work related to the capability approach and human development, the methodologies and applications of multidimensional poverty measurement, and the measurement of well-being, gross-national-happiness, and agency/empowerment. She holds a DPhil in economics from the University of Oxford.


James E. Foster is Professor of Economics and International Affairs at the George Washington University, and Director of the Institute for International Economic Policy in the Elliott School of International Affairs. He earned his PhD in economics from Cornell University, where he received the Selma Fine Goldsmith dissertation award. He is Research Associate at the OPHI and a member of the Human Capital and Economic Opportunity Working Group in the Becker Friedman Institute for Research in Economics at the University of Chicago. In 2012 he was elected Honorary Fellow of Magdalen College, Oxford. Professor Foster's research focuses on welfare economics - using economic tools to evaluate and enhance the wellbeing of people. His joint 1984 Econometrica paper is one of the most cited papers on poverty. It introduced the FGT Index, which has been used in thousands of studies and was the basis for targeting the Progresa program in Mexico.

Suman Seth is a research officer with OHPI. He obtained a PhD in Economics from Vanderbilt University. He has previously served as a consultant to the Regional Bureau of Latin America and the Caribbean of UNDP, the World Bank, and the Asian Development Bank. He has been closely involved with the team that developed the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI). His primary interest lies in the area of development economics with special emphasis on measurement methodologies and policy-oriented applications of multidimensional welfare and poverty measures.


Maria Emma Santos is an Assistant Professor at Departamento de Economia, Universidad Nacional del Sur (UNS) and a Research Fellow at the Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Cientificas y Tecnicas (CONICET-IIESS), Bahia Blanca, Argentina. She is also a research associate at OPHI. She did her first degree in Economics at UNS (2002), her MA in Economic Development at Vanderbilt University (2005) and her Doctorate in Economics at UNS (2008). She spent two years (2008-2010) as a post-doc Research Officer at OPHI. Her main research interests are the measurement, determinants and analysis of multidimensional and chronic poverty, income inequality, and the quality of education.


Jose Manuel is Head of Research at Save the Children UK. He holds a DPhil from the University of Sussex and has over 20 years of research and consultancy experience in international development, poverty analysis, social inequality, human development, and the capability approach. He is also research associate at OPHI and is Junior Research Fellow at Somerville College. He is also Education Officer and Member of the Executive council (elected 2012-2015) of the Human Development and Capability Association (HDCA), coordinator of the Quantitative Research Thematic Group at the HDCA (since 2009) and research fellow at the Social Science Research Centre (CISOR) in Venezuela. He was awarded the 2007 Wiebke Kuklys Prize, and is a Chevening Alumni.


Paola Ballon is a research officer at OPHI. She is also an Invited Lecturer and Associate Researcher at Pontificia Universidad Catolica del Peru. She holds a PhD in econometrics from the University of Geneva. Her expertise is on multidimensional poverty measurement and econometric analysis of poverty and inequality. Her research interests comprise structural equation modeling, micro-econometrics, and development economics. She is a research-consultant for the Poverty Reduction Unit of the World Bank and a Senior Researcher for the Partnership of Economic Policy (PEP) Network. She has also been a researcher at the International Labour Office (ILO), at the United Nations University (UNU-WIDER), and at the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD). She is Member of the Editorial Board of the Review of Income and Wealth.

Excellent overview of a must-read Victorian sensation novelist

Along with Wilkie Collins, Mary Elizabeth Braddon was a creator of what was known in the Victorian era as the Sensation Novel, an excellent definition of a thriller.This useful examination of Braddon's long, important career includes informative biographical and Victorian-culture sections. This is not a full-length biography. That's not a criticism. Instead the book uses a compendium, encylcopedic approach to Braddon and her work, approaching it from many different angles. As a Braddon enthusiast, I refer to this book often. (I'm a novelist, who became a Victorian scholar to write an imitation Victorian sensation novel, Murder as a Fine Art.)
