Its pure Magic

It is not always that a book touches you to the deepest core. One such book was the 'The Good Earth' by Pearl S Buck. After a very long time I read a book with a similar impact on me. The book has balanced the fast pace of a thriller with the considered pace of dharma teachings. It holds the attention of the reader through out and one starts identifying with the characters- in particular Tenzin Dorje. Tibetan Culture, the Prophecy of Padmasambhav, the dedication of the guru and disciple towards each other is fascinating. It paints a picture of a different more gentle world where one can imagine art and culture flowered. On the other hand the cut throat world of big business flows with its relentless pursuit of winning at all cost. And at the point when dharma crosses the corporate path, magic happens.

Then through a series of conversations, the teacher explains the correct perspective on issues troubling the young hero. These conversations are universal in their appeal and would benefit anyone reading the books. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand & apply Buddhist thought to their daily lives. Congratulation for having written a very very special book.

Fascinating Novel

This was a very nice book. I have read a number of books by David Michie and I very much like his personable style of writing that takes you right into the characters and situations. This book was more suspenseful and surprising than his novels regarding the Dali Lhama's cat (which are delightful to read). This book was no less interesting a blend of old Tibetan and modern times. A worthy read.

This book takes a look at a different kind of recruitment, hiring employees on what they are good at and like doing instead of what they can do and have done in the past: strengths-based recruitment (SBR) in other words. It can be a bit of a specialist read if you are not immersed in the world of human resources, yet it was quite a fascinating one. If only more companies would use this method. Of course, employees need to be able to have some core competencies, yet SBR does appear very attractive.

According to the author, companies that have introduced SBR have reported increases in productivity and customer satisfaction, creating more engaged workers who have reduced sickness levels too. There must be a correlation there!

Within this book the author takes a hard look at SBR, mi xing theory, case studies and practitioner interviews together and providing a fine overview on the subject that can be used as an implementation guide if required. For this reviewer, the mass of various interviews really brought the subject to light. Accepting that, of course, you would not be getting dissenting voices slating the concept of SBR, it still was capable of forming a compelling argument and it really was compelling reading. This helped transform it from being just a book for the HR-initiated and made it an ever greater read for a curious generalist. One can imagine that, in the right hands, this book could be a really great resource.

A short but sweet review about a great book that should be required reading for many who have yet to jump aboard the SBR-train!

I brought this short story on a whim because not only did I love the snappy dialogue in the sample, but I also liked the premise. I'm glad I listened to my whim - this is an exceptional short story with a well resolved plot-line and interesting characters. The action, which I won't go into depth because of the shortness of this story, takes place as a fighter squadron is tasked to clear away debris from the planet Freya as they prepare for the installation of a portal. On their way to Freya, the fighter squadron under Major Jaxon Tell Galad is retasked to a greater disaster unfolding around the planet Hera. What I thoroughly enjoyed about this short is the wonderful characterisations that Janet Edwards has drawn; the interaction between best friends Jaxon and Drago Tell Dramis is exceptional, particularly since this short is around 56 pages, and moves through brief glimpses of their shared experiences together from childhood to adulthood. As the story begins, Drago and Jaxon are at odds with each other because Drago has broken some of the complicated cultural mores of clans living in the Beta Sector - Jaxon endlessly insults Drago, while the latter takes it on the chin, having accepted he was in the wrong. I have to say the banter between both Jaxon, Drago and the rest of the squadron is a real pleasure and truly enjoyable to read - had me laughing in some places. Overall, Janet Edward's writing style keeps you engrossed in the story right to the very end - looking forward to reading more of this author's work in the future.

You tend to either love or hate Jullien's work

You tend to either love or hate Jullien's studies of classical Chinese culture (mainly related to early Daoism and the associated arts).

First, they are translations from French, and each book tends to have a different translator, which can have an uneven effect if you read several of his works in a row. And some translated words can be seriously misleading. For instance, Jullien's French original l'esprit is often translated into English 'spirit', when it can also be 'mind', giving an English reader a quite different meaning sometimes to what Jullien intends.

Among the good things about his books are that he is clearly learned in the subject, and has some deep insights and interesting glosses. He often suggests profoundly different ways of seeing things.

The not-so-good (for me) is that he can be pompous with that French intellectual stodge.

When I can put aside his pomposity and verbosity, and just focus on the interesting and penetrating ideas, then I love his books. When I can't, then I don't.

Silent Transformations is probably his least verbose book, where the philosophy, though deep, is treated with a light touch. As a result, I thoroughly enjoyed it, and was educated by reading it.

If you have not read any Jullien before, this is a good book to start on, since his original ideas leap out, without being embedded in too much of the French intellectualism that many English-speaking readers can find so tedious.

About the Author
Lois Fichner-Rathus is professor of art in the Department of Art and Art History of The College of New Jersey. She holds a combined undergraduate degree in fine arts and art history, an M.A. from the Williams College Graduate Program in the History of Art, and a Ph.D. in the History, Theory, and Criticism of Art from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Her areas of specialization include contemporary art, feminist art history and criticism, and modern art and architecture, as well as the theory and foundations of art and design. Dr. Fichner-Rathus is also the author of the Cengage Learning textbooks UNDERSTANDING ART and FOUNDATIONS OF ART AND DESIGN. She teaches study-abroad programs in Paris, Rome, Spain, and Cuba and resides in New York.

A Spiritual Hitchhiker's Guide to the Universe: A Journey of Self-Discovery

In most books on transpersonal states of consciousness and spirituality, the tone is understandably serious, sometimes a little mystical in tone, even scholarly. As a reader, I pay respectful attention to the depth and quality of the narrative, and when I'm finished, I'm left with varying degrees of satisfaction that the book was written in the first place. On rare occasions, a book emerges that combines all the best elements of this genre, and then some. Such a book is Paul Rademacher's A Spiritual Hitchhiker's Guide to the Universe, published by Hampton Press.

The author tackles a difficult subject - his slow process of disillusionment within the confines of traditional religion and his quest for spiritual growth and enrichment that could not be realized within the church. He courageously evaluates his life as a Presbyterian minister along with the events that impel him to move away from the ministry after fifteen years of service. Significantly, he uses humor that plays with the absurdities inherent in the mundane and what philosophers have labeled the realm of "deadly everydayness." Many passages are suffused with this delightful humor. Through his use of the ordinary as a baseline, his mystical experiences take on even greater luminescence and credibility. In addition, interspersed throughout his narrative, he re-examines some major Biblical events so that the psychological significance of the stories opens up in a revelatory way for the reader, taking on a new freshness and relevance.

Ultimately, Paul's quest leads him to The Monroe Institute, in Faber, Virginia, which he likens to a modern-day mystery school. There, amidst the beauty of nature at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains, he discovers that nonphysical reality is accessible outside the context of painful physical mishaps or near-death experiences. As he is safely guided through sessions that delve into the various focus states of non-physical consciousness, he experiences a new kingdom of rich imagery and light. In these focus states, images become one's reality, and the ordinary day-to-day consciousness (C1) is radically expanded in the process. The inevitable conclusion is that one is definitely, "more than one's physical body," the only credo promulgated by The Monroe Institute.

In many ways, Paul's journey mirrors the traditional stages of the hero's journey represented in Joseph Campbell's classic, The Hero with a Thousand Faces. Beginning with his disillusionment as a minister within the Presbyterian church, a "call to adventure" is awakened within him. Consequently, he begins a search for a more meaningful set of values by which to live. During his ministry, although he battles growing doubt and dissatisfaction, he transcends the strenuous demands of his profession and makes himself incredibly accessible to those in need. He is eventually led to discover his life's true mission after experiencing the light of his own soul's reflection in non-physical states. And in his return to society, he has become an enlightened leader who can speak with authority, at last using his own authentic voice to convey important messages and tips for other travelers and seekers. Having turned his beliefs into "knowns," as Robert Monroe would have put it, he is well positioned to change the society in which he lives.

I highly recommend A Spiritual Hitchhiker's Guide to the Universe to anyone who has experienced frustration within the confines of traditional religion and who wishes to learn more about the "sacred calling" of one man who, in some respects, represents everyone's journey. Furthermore, the narrative illustrates how The Monroe Institute is capable of facilitating a rapid growth in consciousness through the use of the Hemi-Sync technology, a scientifically-based method of achieving altered states of consciousness. As a graduate of the Gateway Voyage and Lifeline residential programs, I can attest to the safe, accepting, serene, and completely non-judgmental environment that a week-long residential program at TMI provides. And lastly, I would like to thank Paul Rademacher for serving as a wonderful facilitator during my Gateway Voyage in 2005 before he became the Executive Director of TMI.

The best, most enlightening book I've ever read.

I'm 71 years old and have been "searching" since I was about 30. OK, so I'm a bit slow.... but getting there is supposed to be half the fun, right?
I have had very few "experiences" similar to Paul's, but they all stick in my mind like flypaper. I attended the Monroe Institute for my 60th birthday (gift from my sweet wife) and was very impressed by the results that OTHER people were getting, but I wasn't having the experiences I EXPECTED, so after a feeble effort to continue practicing what I had learned, I let it go completely a few months after I got home.
However, after I ordered and received Wave I-VI of the Monroe Gateway Voyage and started "hemi-syncing" again, I began noticing some synchornicities in my life (like Paul's book). I also noticed some synchronicities that I hadn't noticed in the past, like a small, background voice occasionally saying to me, " ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE" LITERALLY A-N-Y-T-H-I-N-G.

As a retired Physicist I know some of the implications of quantum mechanics and such. Everything seems to be tied together and pointing to a reality that Paul experienced and Jesus described. Only now it seems to be quite literal and more real than anyone imagined. THANK YOU PAUL!

A great read!

Rarely have I enjoyed a book as much as I enjoyed this one. It was like a sumptious feast that I needed to read and digest in small amounts on a daily basis. I usually read very fast and devour whole books in one or two sittings. This book stopped me in my tracks so many times that I read it very slowly and lovingly. Not only is Rademacher an entertaining writer, he presented so many new ideas to me about the biblical stories that were wonderful. I laughed out loud; I cried. But, most of all, I thought and thought. For a week, I read for 45 minutes to an hour before going to sleep each night. Consequently, my dreams were vivid and alive in a way that I have not experienced in a long time. I never wanted it to end, so I would reread some stories over and over. Do yourself a favor and buy a copy of the wonderful book. You will not regret it.
