Written for directors, brilliant for writers

While Mark Travis's book is written for directors, it's an unsurpassed tool for screenwriters as well. It's a wonderful glimpse into the mind of a director, literally revealing the tricks directors use to communicate with-- and even "manipulate"-- writers and performers. As a tool for writers, it not only clues you in on what directors are thinking, what they need from scenes and performers, etc. but it's a straightforward director-writer dictionary. Thus, you can not only help make your communications director-proof... but you can make your scripts director-proof as well. By approaching and rewriting with the eye of a director, you'll not only make the story and the writing stronger, you'll ensure you tell the story YOU want to tell... not a story vulnerable to tweaking and twisting by others down the road.

This is a "Must Have" book!

This was such a well written book with amazingly logical insights. I own (and have read) many books on the subject of Directing. I occasionally find myself "in mental arguments" with advice being given for working with actors, but Mr. Travis clearly has a very long background working with talent. His suggestions are now in my own "Bag Of Tricks!"

Extraordinary!

This is insightful, useful, and well written. If you have any interest in making movies , this is a remarkable piece of work. The title makes it sound more trivial than it is. More accurately it could be called Film Directing Techniques, but I doubt that would sell many copies. As how-to books go, this is one of the best I've ever read.

Jonathan P. Pinder is an Associate Professor of Management at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He earned a BS in Civil Engineering at North Carolina State University and a Ph.D. in Business Administration at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Pinder's research interests include, business analytics, revenue management, stochastic optimization, nonlinear dynamical systems, resource allocation, and inventory management models. He has published articles in numerous journals including: Decision Sciences, Journal of Operations Management, The Journal of the Operational Research Society, Journal of Forecasting, Journal of Business and Economics, and Managerial and Decision Economics. He has received more than a dozen teaching awards and has 25 years of teaching and industry consulting experience.

This is the first book to use simulation to make the concepts of randomness and uncertainty come alive. The true variation that occurs in real data becomes very evident through the simulations. The Excel examples come from practical real word problems clearly demonstrate the use of simulation as a method of optimization.

A narrative account of the turbulent fifth and early sixth centuries is followed by a description of society and politics during the migration period and an analysis of the mechanisms of settlement and the changes of identity. Guy Halsall reveals that the creation and maintenance of kingdoms and empires was impossible without the active involvement of people in the communities of Europe and North Africa. He concludes that, contrary to most opinions, the fall of the Roman Empire produced the barbarian migrations, not vice versa.

Ignore the one hostile and misguided review of this book

I would like to respond to the review below that says there is "nothing new" in this book, and I want to do it in a conspicuous place (not in an appended comment which people are less likely to click on), because that is an unjust and untrue remark. Also, the reviewer says that he would have appreciated the book if he had been reading it for a university course but that in his retirement he just wants the story. In the front matter of my copy of this book it says that this is part of a series "aimed primarily at advanced students and faculty." If he had bought a book on gourmet French cuisine, would he complain because the book didn't give instructions on how to fry up hot dogs and make scrambled eggs? I admit that I am a history professor (though not with a specialty in this period), and I found the book quite useful and readable. OF COURSE it reviews previous literature and gives a (somewhat dry) summary of the events of the period. That is what books like this are supposed to do, and Halsall does it quite well.

An Original and Though Provoking Synthesis...

This is one of my favorite historical periods, and I've read a number of histories of this period, including most of the recent ones and had actually held off on purchasing this because I wondered if it would simply re-tread old ground. I'm pleased to say that this book was an excellent read and contained several highly original ideas that were well thought out and truly provided me with new ways of looking at the period. These include: the true nature of early barbarian settlement, the origin and role of Alaric; the formation of the Frankish kingdom; a quite well thought out analysis of developments in Britain after the fall that engaged the existing evidence to a greater degree than the many books that simply skip over this province, while stopping well short of some of the excesses in other books that analyze this same puzzle; the extent is Visigothic control over Spain, and the role of the moors in Africa and the Vandal kingdom; among other things.

In general, Halsall really excels at calling out the educated guesses made by historians about the period which have morphed over time into accepted facts. He reintroduces a healthy sense of uncertainty and offers up alternative ideas and explanations that encourage you to think more deeply about the period. The primary sources for the 5th century are thin and the desire to explain the fall of the Western Roman Empire in a simple narrative is strong. There is more than one way of interpreting the available evidence and opening the doors to other possibilities helps breath new life into the story of the fall of Rome.

That said, there were some parts of the book that made for slow reading. The obligatory historiography chapter and ethnicity chapter at times felt a bit like eating peas so I could get to dessert. Sure both concepts play an important role in understanding the period and are used to great effect in the subsequent history, they're just less interesting than the actual narrative and analysis that follows. Overall, I rate it 5 stars and would encourage anyone interested in the period to purchase this book, particularly if you've read and enjoyed other recent histories of the period (Wickham, Heather, etc).

The best textbook overview of the subject available

Guy Halsall's Barbarian Migrations and the Roman West is about the best book if you are looking for an overview of modern interpretations of the so called Migration Period. Despite the apparent regional limitation to the 'Roman West' the book also covers a lot of history relating to the 'Roman East' as well. It is a shame and unfair that the rating of this book was marred by a review how took issue with the price.

El mejor comentario en espa�ol

Carballosa, Evis L (1997). Apocalipsis: La Consumaci�n del Plan Eterno de Dios. Grand Rapids, MI: Editorial Portavoz.

No es poco frecuente escuchar a cristianos decir que el libro de la Biblia que m�s dif�cil les resulta entender es el libro de Apocalipsis. Es comprensible, hasta cierto punto, dicha afirmaci�n. La dificultad para entender este libro viene dada, entre otras cosas, por la abundancia de figuras de dicci�n que encontramos de principio a fin. Es por ello que cuando no adentramos en el estudio de un libro tan profundo, y a la vez tan hermoso, como es el libro de Apocalipsis, que necesitamos surtirnos de comentarios b�blicos que nos lleven a la claridad y al entendimiento de lo que estamos leyendo.

Esto es precisamente lo que hace el Dr. Evis L. Carballosa en su comentario Apocalipsis: La Consumaci�n del Plan Eterno de Dios (Portavoz, 1997). Por medio de una hermen�utica basada en el contexto hist�rico-gramatical, cultural y contextual, el Dr. Carballosa desglosa minuciosamente el libro de Apocalipsis vers�culo por vers�culo. Para ello recurre al texto griego, sin que ello sirva de obst�culo en el etudio para aquellos que no dominan el griego del Nuevo Testamento.

El Dr. Carballosa se adhiere a la escuela de interpretaci�n dispensacionalista-futurista en cuanto a escatolog�a se refiere. Por medio de este libro hace una defensa del premilenarismo dispensacionalista, es decir, el punto de vista interpretativo que defiende que el regreso de Cristo tendr� lugar al final de la Gran Tribulaci�n cuando Cristo establecer� su reino por mil a�os (milenio) aqu� en la Tierra. Tambi�n desarrolla la postura pre-tribulacionista, que defiende la interpretaci�n de que el arrebatamiento de la Iglesia tendr� lugar antes del per�odo de siete a�os de la Gran Tribulaci�n.

Sin necesidad de que el lector adopte la misma escuela de interpretaci�n del autor, este libro le ayudar� a esclarecer muchas de las dudas hermen�uticas y textuales que usted pueda tener sobre el libro de Apocalipsis. No corro ning�n riesgo si afirmo que este comentario b�blico es, con toda seguridad, el mejor comentario b�blico que cualquier pastor y creyente en general, en el mundo de habla hispana, puede adquirir en el mercado de libros cristianos.
