Yet another review of this book

I had owned this book before, but gave it to the person who bought my old bus. A friend who is somewhat mechanically inclined but not familiar with air cooled VW's recently bought an old bug, so I got this copy for him. If you are looking for a Haynes, Chilton, or Motor manual, this isn't it. It is more of a novel, possibly a diary about (as the title indicates) keeping VW alive. It can be an entertaining read if you like dry humor, and it doesn't hurt if you can laugh when your projects occasionally dismantle themselves for unknown reasons. I will say it contains a ton of very useful information, some of which you may not find in any other VW manual, but you have to read it closely to glean it. Buy a used copy to save yourself the grease stains you will get on a new one, and save a buck or two. Personally, I believe it is a must read for the first time air-cooled VW owner.

A must have for all aircooled VW owners

John Muir is regarded as the expert in the field as far as aircooled VW's. This book is extremely easy to read. It makes capable mechanics out of "compleat idiot"s with its easy going style.
For a complete collection, buy the VW service manual by Robert Bentley to complement the Muir book. With these two references, available through amazon.com, you have everything you need to perform any and all repairs on your aircooled VW.

An absolute classic!

Written with great thought and plenty of wit, this book sets out to allow any person who so desires to maintain their Volkswagen without needing to have any automotive training or prior knowledge at all.
I purchased it more as a collector piece than anything else, but maybe one day I will use it for more than entertainment value. :)
This is not written for mechanics. It is not anything like a typical shop manual, so if you are going to use it to guide you through a repair, don't expect it to be a quick reference.
Instead, read the section that applies to what you need all the way through prior to even opening your toolbox.
You'll be glad you bought this book if you buy it!

This is a specialist book, for a specialist audience about a fairly important and fascinating subject, namely analysing the performance of a company’s human resources (HR) and its HR department.

The routine activities of HR are well known, yet recording their activities and the makeup of a company is less-so. Modern day activities such as diversity analysis, employee turnover and predictive employee turnover are, or should be, increasingly relevant, especially to the larger enterprise.

In the right hands, the reader should be able to get a better understanding of how to gather, analyse and interpret HR data for the benefit of the company-at-large. It is not a “Big Brother” approach, recording ever minor transgression such as timekeeping or comments made on social media. There is nothing here that an employee needs to fear.

This book seeks to provide a means to using statistical modelling and analytical techniques. It is a heavy-read, despite being fairly accessible and well-written, due to the nature of the information under discussion. Nothing is left to chance, the book starts with an introduction to predictive HR analytics and explains gathering HR data and converting it into a usable format. Use of the statistical analysis program SPSS is necessary and the authors explain how to use this powerful, yet often bewildering program, for the specific purpose of HR analytics. No doubt you could use other packages or try and analyse things by hand, yet you’d lose out on a large chunk of this book’s benefit in the process. Focus is then given to specific user case examples, providing a real hands-on opportunity to uses such as diversity, employee attitude and engagement, employee turnover, employee performance, recruitment and selection and even impact interventions. Sample data is provided to let the reader “try it for themselves” and see how everything works and goes together.

There is a lot of theory, this is unavoidable, but it is still fairly clear and easy to follow. You just need to assign time to really focus on this stuff, if you don’t already live and breathe the subject.

The benefits are clear, the pathway to getting them is fairly understandable. It just needs a fair bit of hard work and focus along the way. If you are in the need for a book like this, this is a potential Godsend. Even if you don’t, it can be strangely interesting and compelling… or this reviewer is just a bit too nerdy for his own good!

While this book may require the reader to be comfortable statistics concept to really appreciate the value, I find the author did a GREAT job link analytical technique and HR domain knowledge.

It has many relevant cases for you to get your hands dirty.

This probably should be your first HR analytic book but it can be your last if you master the content.

Nice Book...will give it a try

I only just quickly perused the book online and it seems to be a nice compilation of natural product syntheses written by authors who were involved in one synthesis of the titled natural product. Isolation, structure elucidation, biological activity studies, retrosyntheses and syntheses are presented. It's a nice format. These reviews are similar too, but sufficiently different from what appears in Strategies and Tactics in Organic Synthesis that I can breathe a bit of a sigh of relief. The price on Amazon is a real steal. I just might give this book a try in my synthesis course. I will try to remember to report further after that time.

Carel van Schaik is a professor of biological anthropology at the University of Zurich, where he is director of the Anthropological Institute and Museum. He lives in Zurich, Switzerland.

and *The Good Book of Human Nature* is one of them

There are a handful of books that have truly changed my opinions across the board on the most important issues, and *The Good Book of Human Nature* is one of them. In a lifetime of reading the bible and at least the last twenty-five years of biblical scholarship, this has to be among the freshest, most useful analyses I've encountered. After a lifetime as an exceptionally committed evangelical Christian I became an atheist long ago, but Carel van Schaik and Kai Michel have renewed my respect for religion and the bible (although I remain an atheist), providing a new understanding of the crucial and beneficial place of the Abrahamics and the bible in the cultural evolution of our species. And that's a lot.

A must read for bible skeptics.

Before I continue let me submit a bit of a gripe. I bought the book .. a month later I was invited to use, free for one month, Kindle's unlimited reading program (I had purchased a Kindle Paperwhite). The instructions stated that I had to use one click ordering for the unlimited reading program. I one click ordered the kindle version of this book because I wanted an easier way to check unfamiliar words (using the Kindle dictionary). I was promptly billed another $20 (i had now spent $40 for this book - grrr). Going into the fine print I realized this program wasn't for all books, only for a select few. I tried to return the hard cover book but found that I was a few days too late. Now with my angry tirade out of the way:

From the time I was a very young child, my view of the bible was that it was nothing but a series of fairy tales (the church would be wise to stop teaching children this way - if they haven't done so already). Anyhow I recently ran across a book review excerpt from this book and immediately put my order in for it. It's everything I had hoped it would be. It makes the bible make sense. Also, it's very well written. There's an amazingly large amount of information to be passed on to us but it's organized in such a manner that even I can keep all that information in perspective (something that gets ever harder as you pass on into your waning years).

Great classroom asset

Leadership is a tough subject to teach. There are plenty of books with 'leadership' in the title and as many definitions of leadership as there are authors writing about leadership. This book will be a big help to the professor looking for an integrative solution for the classroom.
Manning and Curtis do a wonderful job for the teacher looking for a comprehensive, engaging tool for teaching students about the 'art' of leadership. In the process, Manning and Curtis offer a variety of interesting and involving exercises, essays, examples, and ideas about the practice and profession of leadership. Over sixty people assisted in the review process to develop the book.
Manning is a psychology professor and Curtis is a professor and coordinator of leadership and organizational studies, both at Northern Kentucky University.
This is a 368-page workbook, with more than thirty exercises designed to illustrate various aspects of leadership. The book is divided into nine parts and 28 chapters, including parts on vision, ethics, empowerment and performance management, among others. Leaders are portrayed as teachers, heroes and rulers. Chapters include self-assessment and end-of-the-chapter summaries with answer keys. There are sixteen pages of current endnotes and a lengthy glossary.
