Everyone has heard the Christmas story before, but THE LAST STRAW is a unique and unforgettable new telling. Voices roll across the desert sands to Hoshmakaka, a curmudgeonly old camel, whispering that he has been chosen for the great responsibility of carrying gifts to the new baby king. With reluctance, Hoshmakaka accepts his task. Every day in the heat crossing the desert, his pack grows ever more burdensome as the crowds of people, anxious to welcome the new king, give him their gifts to carry. He is as strong as ten horses as he proudly tells the younger camels. But, oh, his gout! Oh, his sciatica! Nevertheless, Hoshmakaka plods on until he reaches Bethlehem. In the end he realizes the great honor of his task and never again is there a burden too heavy for him to carry.

Vlasta van Kampen's gorgeous illustrations of the hot desert sands and the cool, star-filled night sky transport readers on the journey to Bethlehem to see the new baby king. The beautifully detailed illustrations of the loveable Hoshmakaka masterfully change as his pack of gifts grows impossibly huge.

Kindergarten-Grade 3-Hoshmakaka, an old, foolish, and proud camel, is chosen to carry the wise men's gifts to the baby Jesus. Reluctantly, he agrees and boasts to the younger camels that he has the strength of 10 horses. As he embarks on his journey, people along the way ask him to take their gifts. Goaded by the younger camels, he keeps adding to his load. A small child asks him to carry one last gift, a piece of straw for the baby's bed, and Hoshmakaka is brought to his knees by the weight. Jesus reaches out and touches him and "From that time on there was no burden, great or small, that Hoshmakaka would not gladly carry." The story is adapted from Thury's original libretto, performed by the Toronto Children's Chorus. Strikingly rich, detailed watercolors enrich the text. While the humbling message may be too subtly conveyed for very young children, this low-keyed and gentle story can be enjoyed by a broad audience.-M.W.

A grumpy camel's boast comes back to haunt him in this engaging Christmas picture-book tale, adapted from a choral libretto. Despite gout, sciatica, and general surliness, old Hoshmakaka reluctantly agrees to carry the Wise Men's gifts to the baby king. But because he incautiously puffs himself up before the younger camels, he also ends up taking jugs of milk and wine, baskets of pastries, and other presents offered along the way. Vlasa van Kampen's bright, sharply detailed watercolors depict the shaggy protagonist plodding along in stately arrogance beneath a burden that grows to comically towering proportions. When a child asks him to carry a piece of straw, Hoshmakaka refuses. He relents, however, but he realizes that if he wants to finish his trek, he'd better not stop again. Entering the stable at last, the camel falls to his knees in exhaustion, whereupon a touch of the baby's hand dispels both the burden's weight and the camel's wounded pride. The text and illustrations work unusually well together to evoke the story's humorous undertone while preserving a grand sense of occasion. John Peters

After hearing mysterious voices declaring his role, the aged but proud camel Hoshmakaka reluctantly agrees to journey to far-off Bethlehem bearing gifts for a new baby king. As he makes his way along the road he is heaped with presents large and small, light and heavy, until his joints ache and his legs nearly buckle. A child's piece of straw, offered for the baby's bed, brings Hoshmakaka to his knees, but not before he has entered the stable where others also kneel. Whimsical watercolor illustrations detail Hoshmakaka's stately carriage, his growing burden, and his emotional transformation from arrogant to humble. Be Sure To Witness This Different Perspective!

Hoshmakaka is a camel that appears selfish from the very beginning. After hearing voices in the wind, he is given a task to help the three "wise men" on their own journey to see Jesus. His foolishness/pride eventually makes his journey harder than it may have originally been while traveling to witness the birth of the baby Jesus. Now, he struggles to prove to himself, as well as his peers, that he's not all talk.

While only a thirty-two page book, the illustrations and story are miraculous in every aspect. The notion of something being "the last straw that broke the camel's back" is taken both figuratively and literally in this story. I absolutely recommend this alternative nativity story to anyone willing to experience an unconventional perspective not usually portrayed around Christmastime. With a beautiful ending, the audience is sure to grasp the meaning of Christmas while learning a lifelong virtue readers are sure to see. Happy reading!

I love this book

I love this book! We were looking for a book for our Christmas program to take our own pictures of the kids dressed up that went along with the book and then make a slideshow to run while someone reads the book. This book is sooooo awesome. It metaphors all the things that weigh us down in life, but then when we bring them to Jesus, He takes them for us. I love the book and I cannot wait for our Christmas program! I would totally recommend it!

This was a Christmas gift for my almost 10-year old son. It had been recommended to me by a friend. I found it uplifting and humorous at the same time. A look at the Wise Men's visit to the Christ child through the eyes of their camel.

Sigur�ur Gylfi Magn�sson is currently the chair of the Center for Microhistorical Research at the Reykjav�k Academy (www.microhistory.org) and Dr. Kristj�n Eldj�rn Research Fellow at the National Museum of Iceland. He is the author of seventeen books and numerous articles published in Iceland and abroad. His previous publications include Wasteland with Words. A Social History of Iceland (2010).

Istv�n M. Szij�rt� is Associate Professor in the Department of Economic and Social History at Lor�nd E�tv�s University, Hungary. He is the author of three books and several articles published in Hungary and abroad. His previous publications include Experience, Agency, Responsibility. The Lessons of Russia’s Microhistory (2011).

The book was very helpful for my research on Wesley's Quadrilateral. It was an easy read with layers of helpful information to develop and worked well with other readings.

Interesting; could be better

I am not finished with this book but I already feel that I've learned a lot about John Wesley and his approach to theology, and I feel a closer kinship with Wesley as a result. It is also becoming clearer to me just how far off course the United Methodist Church has drifted from the Wesleyan "way" - especially in the western U.S. But sometimes the author gets a bit too wordy or repetitive in trying to make a point and that hurts the quality of his work, I think. Maybe I'll change my mind on this point after I've finished the book and I'll return to this review to update it as appropriate. Meanwhile, I recommend this book to anybody who wants to learn more about Wesley's theological positions and who/what influenced him as he developed his understanding of how reason, tradition, and experience can support our understanding of Scripture but must never replace Scripture as an authority in our faith.

About the Author

Cheech & Chong defined a generation with their classic, counter-culture comedy albums and cult films, such as the wildly popular Earache My Eye and Up in Smoke. After their split, the pair went on to have successful solo careers in both TV and film, with Cheech taking on roles like Joe on Nash Bridges and Belini in Once Upon a Time in Mexico, and Chong portraying Leo in That 70’s Show. I would write a HUGE positive review of this amazing, hilarious and oh-so-true compendium of cannabis but I can't seem to remember what was in this book...or was it a CD? a BluRay?

Errors in this book

I recently attended a Cheech and Chong concert and it was one of the best concerts I have seen in a long time. They haven't lost a thing. I bought this book because I am a long time pot smoker and one of the authors of California's Prop 215. I loved the book but there are two glaring errors in the book I am going to point out in hopes that either Cheech or Chong reads this review and corrects the errors for the second printing.

1 - Page 85 - Stoner Etiquette - Entry number 4 - When you light a bowl, light the corner to leave fresh weed on the other side. NEVER do that. It is dumb. What happens if you do that is the hit will contain only a small percentage of smoke and a large percentage of fresh air, which will dilute the hit severely. When lighting a bowl you should always light the entire surface of the bowl for the most powerful hit possible. I would only light a small area if I was a total lightweight (and I am as far from a lightweight as is humanly possible).

2 - Page 99 - Gravity Bong. A bong is a water pipe that filters smoke by passing the smoke through water. The Gravity Bong does use water, but not for filtering. It uses water pressure to fill the bottle with smoke and to fill your lungs with smoke, but none of the smoke is filtered therefore it is not a bong.

Sorry to be so picky C&C but I gotta point these out. I still love ya!

Fascinating book about marijuana, with facts, little known stories, myths, etc., all interspersed with classic Cheech and Chong bits. Worth $20 for sure!!!
