Very easy to understand

This book is good for any college student in need of guidance on how to conduct research. The chapters are well sequenced, the topics flowing from the previous ones. Each start with an overview and the objectives of the chapter, and finish with a "self-check list" (in the form of a multiple choice quizz) to help the reader know if she/he understood what was read. Also, any new vocabulary is highlighted and defined in the glossary. The authors even put a suggestion sheet at the end of the book for when they write the next edition (I thought it was "cute" yet scientific the way they did this; if you get the book, you'll know what I mean!).

Good resource, but presents inaccurate stats information

This book is a terrific introductory resource for any student of education. It explains in clear and easy-to-understand terms the mechanics and process of educational research. Difficult concepts are within the reach of any college student thanks to Gall, Gall, and Borg's writing.

However, there are a few problems with their text. Some of their statistics explanations are incorrect, and they even go so far as to explicitly recommend using ANCOVA in inappropriate situations. They also do not explain reliability and validity with enough detail to avoid common misconceptions in the field.

As a student, I'm glad that this text is so accessible, but I'm even more thankful that I have the statistics background to notice the errors in the text. Most of my classmates, though, aren't so lucky. They will be seriously misled by this otherwise great textbook.

Only If You Have To...

As a life long learner, an experienced practioner and graduate student (again), I throughly enjoy my professional library. However, I have two books that I would never have purchased if I had not had to - Editions 7 and 8 of Educational Research. This is a mind-numbing traditional textbook. The authors write with an officious, academic style. While they have tried to incorporate qualitiatve research into their work, the positivist bias is so strong that it comes across as condensending. Also as an older learner, I find the type set and page layout difficult to read. There are so many better books, I would not buy this one if you can avoid it.

She read my mind ...

Since rededicating my life three years ago, things have gone crazy. I am so thankful
for A. J.'s offering of what God has obviously directed her to write.
I swung by a Christian Bookstore in Bakersfield, on my way to Yosemite. I found "Messy Faith" on a sale stand and couldn't resist the title, cover and her opening thoughts. It's hard for me to get hooked in a book. I read a few paragraphs and found
myself pulling over to read a chapter.
What a relief. It seems so simple. She challenges us to be honest in our walk with Christ. When we do, things can get messy. I have been describing the past few years to my friends by saying, it's like God cleaning out my garage. There's so much there, He's deciding what stays and goes. In the meantime, the driveway is full of junk I don't need any more. Thank you, A. J. for writing the book that became my vacation this week. My intention was to do a lot of other things, I spent it with our loving God, letting Him use you to show me some very important things.

Renewing and Refreshing

During a vacation from an intense job/ministry with the homeless, I desired to read a good book that would be medicine for my weary soul. Messy Faith, was the right medicine, as if prescribed by Jesus to renew and encourage my faith. Not only is A.J. a highly gifted writer but she also has deep penetrating insights (and wit) into our human condition and God's transforming grace. Her authenticity and transparency about her own journey and brokenness (how refreshing), in the context of sound Biblical wisdom, makes Messy Faith a must read for all who truly dare to live by grace - and just maybe (like for me) you might also trust and love Him a little more. I am re- reading the book and look forward to reading more from A.J. Gregory!

Gregory paints a real life, sometimes gritty, sometimes hilarious journey of faith. Wherever you are in your walk of faith, this book is an incredible guide that essentially explores success and failure along with issues of addiction. Simply put, whenever any person of faith leans on anything other than God first, addiction can take over, lead to sin and away from God. Read this book and then read it again. It's simply wonderful.

I have been taking this book with me everwhere I go in my car. Whenever I sit down at a restaurant to eat, I read this book to help pass the time and get re-educated at the same time. This book is very nicely written. Very unbiased. Very frank and straightforward in its handling of tough topics. For examples, the factual presentation of how blacks and American Indians have been treated was very honest. The authors did not try to couch our government's dishonorable behavior in soft terms or condemn in hard terms. Very factual and readable. If you feel you would like to revisit 7th grade American History material again, this is one fine book to do it with.

A Pirate Looks at Fifty, a travel-diary-cum-autobiography, features Buffett behind the wheel of his Grumman Albatross seaplane, safely piloting family and friends through a three-week trip around South and Central America and the Caribbean. He blends gentle scenic narration with rambling, unplugged life stories meant to convey that he's made peace with the whole aging process. For Buffett, turning 50 "can be a ball of snakes that conjures up immediate thoughts of mortality and accountability. (`What have I done with my life?') Or, it can be a great excuse to reward yourself for just getting there. (`He who dies with the most toys wins.') I instinctively chose door number two."

On this tack, Buffett plans an opulent, laid-back trip for his brood and goes into so many details about his favorite possessions (three pages on knapsacks!) that the cheerful vagabond in flip-flops is nearly eclipsed by the rich, domesticated businessman/dad he's become. In addition, stinging losses and limitations--his dad's Alzheimer's disease, his own terrifying solo plane crash in 1996--creep into his cozy yarns. Yet Buffett's infectious, grinning attitude towards life eventually finds resurrection in extended riffs on fly-fishing, solo piloting over water, and surfing. In such passages, he earns his claim to a "saline psyche," a legacy inherited from his grandfather, skipper of a five-masted barkentine that ferried lumber from New Orleans to the Caribbean. The breezy pop craftsman of "Margaritaville" and "Cheeseburger in Paradise" famously spends most of his time sailing, trotting out 1970s chestnuts on the summer tour circuit?and writing. Buffett's bestselling Tales from Margaritaville (1989) and Where Is Joe Merchant? (1992), among other books, created a world of sun-baked characters whose doings bore some resemblance to those of their author. This memoir draws back the curtain between fact and fiction, and genially takes stock in a manner likely to appeal to the Me generation. Though he rambles, repeats himself and may even raise hackles ("I have been too warped by Catholicism not to be cynical"), Buffett is earnest and unapologetic in his hedonism, seeing his mock pirate's life as the antithesis of the conformity foisted on him as a child in Alabama. In a series of loosely chronological vignettes, Buffett quickly takes us from his bar-band beginnings to a brush with death when he crashes one of his fleet of seaplanes. A lower-latitude voyage with his family (in a newer, bigger plane) to celebrate his 50th birthday makes up the bulk of the book, and takes them from Florida to the Cayman Islands, Costa Rica, Colombia and the Amazon. The diaristic logbook that Buffett keeps along the way provides endless opportunities to muse on the music business; his older, wilder ways; navigation and, on the horizon, approaching mortality. Buffett's prose won't itself win him more "parrotheads" (as his fans are called), but those with enough patience or reverence to wade through long descriptions of beloved gear, favorite books or "fucking tikki pukki drinks" will find beneath these amblings a disarmingly direct character. Mellow singer-songwriter Buffett's previous best-selling books?the essay-and-story collection Tales from Margaritaville (LJ 10/1/89) and the novel Where Is Joe Merchant? (Harcourt, 1992)?were sometimes reviewed as "laidback" and "perilously close to sloppy." With this autobiographical journal, even his most devoted fans may feel he has stepped over that line. Eleven sections offer 66 chapters, many consisting of multiple vignettes. Some of these are entertaining?Buffett never takes himself or others too seriously?but the more one reads the more superficial the writer appears to be. Genuinely sentimental memories are treated with the same slapdash attitude as a fishing story. This approach is partly justified in the introduction, where Buffett explains that the impetus for this "journal" was that he had signed a book deal and could not make any of his other ideas work. These intertwined, meandering recollections would make a nice column in the local paper, but as the memoirs of a creative talent they are deeply disappointing. Buy as demand warrants.

Light, Interesting Read

We really enjoy books written by Jimmy Buffett. They are well written, humorous and easy reads. A Pirate Looks at Fifty has moments of poignancy, humor and interesting tidbits about Jimmy's life. Since we are Jimmy Buffet fans, we both really enjoy this book. We have had A Pirate Looks at Fifty for a few years and find ourselves reaching for it from the bookshelf when we want a light, entertaining read for travel or for lazy days at the beach or on boat trips. I recommend this book and also suggest looking into purchasing other books written by Jimmy Buffett.

I'm No Parrothead, But I Can Relate

This travel diary, autobiography, Buffett philosophy, & memoir is something I've had on the shelf for several years, and not too excited about pulling it down for a read. I'm not a huge Buffett fan (he had only a couple of big musical hits with Cheese Burgers in Paradise and Margaritaville, but he continues to record music, publish books, and has a rabid fan base of Parrotheads). The dude is laid back, loves squeezing every bit of life he can into each day, loves his family, has no religion (he dwells on that issue a few too many times......a disillusioned Catholic).......and flying his seaplane and fishing are his addictions. Basically, Buffett takes a 3 week seaplane trip into the Caribbean, Central and South America to celebrate and reflect on his life and turning fifty. Actually, the book was published in 1998 and Buffett is turning 60 this month.......I wonder if he'll write another book about turning 60?

Buffett has been lucky in life. Though he's done things in his past that he can look back upon and laugh about (or breathe a sigh of relief that he survived), at age fifty he reflects back. He has considerably cleaned up his act, though he's still no angel. The book is part travelog and history, autobiography, Buffett philosophy, great and not-so great Buffett stories from his rock and roll past. A mishmash of wherever his mind wanders. He's a great story-teller and his laid-back sense of adventure is lots of fun. He's been a wild man during his life and done things that I'd never do, but I can certainly laugh about (and sometimes relate to). I too was a wild man in my younger days. I'm not proud of everything I always did, but thank goodness you get smarter with age, and I am now a saint (ha ha).

The dude, the Caribbean, sailing, flying, his music, fishing, and lots of odd-balls stories........lots of fun. It's a book for mature audiences, so the kids have to wait to read this one. I think it's a book for any Buffett-lover and a great "guy" book. Mellow and wild. I'm still no fan of his music, but I did enjoy this book. I certainly recommend it.

"A Pirate Turns Fifty" may be one of those idioms of that time and place where a generation of North Americans found some sense of becoming, and then, of being, the first generation of people born beyond the confines of an adversarial view of the human condition.
If you enjoy the humor intrinsic in the human experience, Jimmy Buffet serves up a feast of anedotes, yarns, and healthy fictional illusions that repeatedly hit on the folly of taking things too seriously. This little volume exposes Buffet as a truly gifted humorist in a time when humor was verging on the obscene and purely pessimistic side of life. Interleafed with autobiographical sketches, Buffet does a wonderful job at entertaining in the style that Mark Twain so lavishly conjured into American Literature.
If you're a Boomer, this is Jimmy's BOOMER ON THE HALF-SHELL, --you'll love it; --and you'll be looking for the sequel. =======> '"Bop til you drop", ...he whispered.'

I purchased my copy of this book as soon as it was available, having fallen in love with her words the first time I read them on FB. Nausicaa left no part of my heart or soul untouched with her unbelievably on-point words of every subject imaginable, but poetry vague enough to be interpreted to your individual life and love and loss situations. She strives for happiness and to be love and light, although one can tell she has also suffered great pain in her life. About the Author
Wei Pan, PhD, is Associate Professor and Biostatistician in the School of Nursing at Duke University. His research interests include causal inference (confounding, propensity score analysis, and resampling), advanced modeling (multilevel, structural, and mediation and moderation), meta-analysis, and their applications in the social, behavioral, and health sciences. Dr. Pan has published over 50 articles in refereed journals, as well as other publications, and has served on the editorial boards of several journals.�He is the recipient of several awards for excellence in research, teaching, and service.

Haiyan Bai, PhD, is Associate Professor of Quantitative Research Methodology at the University of Central Florida. Her interests include resampling methods, propensity score analysis, research design, measurement and evaluation, and the applications of statistical methods in the educational and behavioral sciences. She has published a book on resampling methods as well as numerous articles in refereed journals, and has served on the editorial boards of several journals. Dr. Bai is a Fellow of the Academy for Teaching, Learning, and Leadership and a Faculty Fellow at the University of Central Florida, where she has been the recipient of several awards for excellence in research and teaching.

Several features are included in this book. Concepts, methods, issues and solutions related to the propensity score are easy to understand and learn. SAS, Mplus or STATA code has been demonstrated for some basic topics on how to estimate the propensity score and match the units in different groups. More interestingly, The topics are presented in a way concepts and fundamentals of propensity score come first and then estimation and matching methods for the score are detailed. It is a good book for professionals and academic researchers in social, psychological, and health/medical sciences.

Great advance on relationships; takes patience to read

Gottman's work is deservedly renowned, and this is no exception. Unlike a lot of other "next books" that are repeats of an ongoing theme with very little added, The Science of Trust feels mostly new. If you've read Gottman's other works, the parts that foundational are presented in a useful context and with additional elements, so even reading about them again creates new insights. And, of course, the focus on "trust" as a key new ingredient in successful relationships is very useful--particularly because Gottman develops it in a scientific way that takes a lot of the ambiguity out, and replaces it with clearer insight and ideas for how to operationalize it. I'm looking at my copy of the book now, and it has over 40 pages bookmarked with material I want to apply...for example the importance of building trust in ways that include space for challenging emotions, "ATTUNE" dimensions for emotional connection, dynamic models of how trust is built (or betrayed), attuning during regrettable incidents....

That said, the book is heavy reading in the later chapters. Gottman has a lot of mathematical modeling that, personally, I love--but imagine others who've read his more popularized books might find challenging, even though these parts are well explained.

My recommendation: if you're serious about relationships, and are patient, get it and read what you can. You'll learn something worthwhile.

Important, credible, useful, but not particularly enjoyable

I wanted to give this book five stars. My shelves are full of relationship books and parenting books (my specialty), and Gottman is prominent among them. Gottman's credibility is essentially unsurpassed, and his work has been enormously influential in both a research and a practical sense. As soon as I heard about The Science of Trust I ordered it, anxiously awaiting an opportunity to delve into Gottman's latest offering. Unfortunately, my five-star hopes were not met.

The book contains valuable information, no doubt. However the book is far too technical for a non-professional audience. For example, Gottman throws around psychological jargon and statistical terms (such as "discriminant function analysis") freely with limited or no explanation for a lay-audience. Additionally, at least three chapters are dedicated to the mathematics and story behind "Game Theory". For the mathematically inclined I'm sure this is great. For those wishing to learn about relationships it is tedious. Even for clinicians/therapists much of the material is superfluous and lacking in immediate practical application.

Gottman's previous offerings (in trade books) have been wonderfully accessible, full of practical detail, and enjoyable to read and talk about. I found the content of the book fell into two categories for me: superb and informative, or dry, tedious, and unnecessary. As such, I believe this book could have been written in around half the pages.

Another quibble that started as a minor one but grew as the book progressed... the number of spelling and grammatical errors was simply breathtaking. The editorial team have shown a lack of attention to detail that was disappointing.

I wish I could give this book more stars. I'm a Gottman admirer, and have spent my life working towards improving family life. In the end, reading The Science of Trust became a chore. I was glad to finally finish the book and put it back on the shelf.

explains a lot, it's about how couples relate

Yes the relationship is a thing, it's not just him or her. This book is all about studies of processes within couples relating to each other.
If you want to understand how to nurture a relationship or recognise certain characteristics of relationships
This explains a lot of how relationships work or do not work, also when they continue or split, why and what predicts it and how to make things go well in a relationship in ways that build trust. Looking in my past, this book made a lot of sense.
It is also interesting as to how they setup experiments to learn about these positive neutral and negative processes in loving relationships.
This Gottman book is not a workbook so its good for an emotionally intelligent bachelor preparing for a life long relationship as well as those already in a relationship.
