Bobby books and this one in particular are awesome for fundamentals as well as some more advance concepts

Mixing Engineers Handbook, 4th edition is another solid book by Bobby Owsinski. No matter how long I’ve been at this every time I pick up one of his books I learn something new. I appreciate the practical advice that he provides in every section. I read these in the wrong order probably (Mix Engineers HB, Music Producers HB, Mixing Bootcamp & Finally Recording Engineers Handbook next up Mastering) but it doesn’t matter each one is definitely worth the $$. I've been in and out of studios since I was young & I've been teaching music technology/recording arts at a variety of colleges/universities/institutes for the last eight years. Mr. Owsinski's books and this one in particular are awesome for fundamentals as well as some more advanced concepts. They serve as a great resource/ lecture material to use with my classes. Highly recommended!

The Best, Most Comprehensive Book on Audio Recording I've Ever Read..

This is a superb, comprehensive and entertaining guide to audio recording, covering everything from the characteristics of classic and modern microphones, to recording techniques for practically any instrument (or voice) you'd ever want to track, to in-depth interviews with some of the top recording engineers of all time.. and THEN some. The illustrations and techniques for drum recording - alone - are easily worth the price of the book and surpasses anything I've encountered in other books or on the internet..

It's been years since I've taken recording classes, but The Recording Engineer's Handbook goes *well* beyond the textbooks I read back then, and does so in an easy-to-access manner that has made this book a permanent fixture in my studio. And.. reading the interviews with some of the top pros in the business is a fascinating and inspiring glimpse into their thinking and work processes that is certain to help most any engineer, regardless of whether you're working alone out of a bedroom studio or are recording high-end clients in commercial studios, full time. This is a resource I *know* I'll be returning to again and again.

Background: I started in the recording industry in the early 70's and have a small library of industry related books and DVD's.

1) This book is very mic specific. If you're puzzled how to mic bagpipes...it's in here. If you're debating which mic to buy for an upcoming session challenge...it's in here. Lots of mic related questions answered.

2) Basic outboard gear and DAW systems are covered.

3) Recording philosophy: Bobby as well as eleven additional heavy hitters in the field share their studio secrets. Attitude is extremely important in this business. Really, it's a make or break proposition.

4) Bobby is one of the clearest thinkers writing about complex recording equipment, attitude and approach you are likely to find. He's a combination of great ears, outstanding success and stellar people skills. In short, a very good role model for newbies as well as grizzled veterans.

I've never met Bobby (so I've not been swayed by his charm and charisma) but do admire his work in the studio as well as teacher. I recommend without reservation the 4th edition of The Recording Engineer's Handbook. Happy recording amigos.

Grade 9 Up - Rebellious in his East London home and deeply alienated from his alcoholic West Indian father, 15-year-old Ray pops off during class, gets expelled, and joins his best friends, outgoing Prem and contemplative Tyrone, who have also been "excluded" from school. All three are passionate hip-hop lovers who hang out in a small music shop run by a sympathetic Jamaican named Marga Man. After they are jailed following a fight, the headmaster decides to enroll them in an alternative program that allows them to pursue their rap interests. Marga Man uses his music contacts to get them started in a band - the Positive Negatives - and they soon become successful. Unfortunately, they attract the attention of a rival band. Spurred on by a greedy promoter, the rappers engage in a deadly gang fight that both groups later regret. With the promoter in jail, they vow to work together to end the violence. Ray is an appealing and multidimensional character, but many of the others are little more than types. Mirroring the culture of "gangsta rap," some of the dialogue is misogynist (girls are referred to as "bitches"), stereotyped (Marga Man speaks a combination of mainstream and pidgin English), and raw. All three have been expelled (Ray for calling his headmaster "a big pussy"). Their only passion is hip-hop, and Manga Man, an older Jamaican who owns a music shop, is the only adult they respect. Then the boys' former headmaster enrolls the teens in a progressive school that combines traditional coursework with practical music experience. With the help of Manga Man, the boys dive into their work and form a band. A fairy tale of hip-hop success follows: a record deal and massive fame and wealth. A few characters lack dimension, and a subplot about a violent hip-hop rivalry doesn't entirely work. The boys' speech also occasionally echoes the harsh misogyny in some of the hip-hop they love: "I see some bitches that look like they want some training." But teens will enjoy the thrilling music fantasy, while many will identify with the smart, talented boys who grow up quickly and rescue themselves. Gillian Engberg

An interesting look at the rap industry

Fifteen-year old Ray is living in a life of turmoil. He's constantly fighting with his parents --- especially his father --- in their East London flat. At school, it's even worse. His best friends, Tyrone and Prem, have been kicked out. Then Ray threatens a staff member, and he too is "permanently excluded." The only happiness the boys have is listening to music and spending time at the local music shop. The store is run by an older Jamaican, who they affectionately call "Marga Man."

Once the boys are no longer in school, they get into even more trouble on the streets. The reality of their situation hits hard when they are thrown in jail for fighting in a public park, which only angers their parents further. When the school board contacts their families, it seems as if there is only one solution. The boys have been invited to join an alternative education program targeted towards what interests them most: music. All of their studies will be focused on music and the music industry. As part of this experience, they are to work in an actual recording studio. Although some of their parents are hesitant at first, the boys give it a shot.

With Marga Man as their manager, the boys create a rap group called the Positive Negatives. They are swept up into the music industry and become superstars practically overnight. They record an album, perform on television, and are selling out live concerts. At this point, the plot seems to go off track, like a train running out of control. In the first part of the book, the reader is drawn in slowly by the characters of Ray, Tyrone and Prem. As the music takes over their lives, the plot speeds up on overdrive, and the subtleties of each teen are lost.

And then, in an odd and almost confusing twist of events, the issue of gang warfare comes into the story. The Positive Negatives are first being harassed and then attacked by unknown gang members. Now, they struggle to deal with both their fame and the world of the cruel streets.

Author Benjamin Zephaniah is a poet and performing artist in England. His poetry is displayed in the rap lyrics that are scattered throughout this work. If you want to learn more about the world of the rap music industry, then GANGSTA RAP is the book for you.

8 Mile for TEENS!

This book definately sets the tone as a great comparison to 8 Mile. Parents should know that this book has strong language but provides an excellent storyline of three boys entering the wonderful and at points violent world. A grreat novel!

Gangsta Rap

Our story begins with a shouting match between Ray and his dad. This scene displays the anger, tension and miscommunication that propels Ray and his friends Prem and Tyrone to act irrationally and rudely. RaLater tht morning, Ray explodes on his teacher and threatens him, I guess carrying on the anger from home. Ray is permanently excluded from school as Prem and Tyrone already have been. We don't really get to the root of Ray's anger. We know that his dad drinks a lot, has a temper and doesn't understand his son. We know that his mom does everything she can to hold the family together. At a final meeting before the boys are given their walking papers, they're given the option of attending an alternative school. It's a very new school, the mothers are skeptical, but it is seems to be their only hope of getting a diploma for their sons.

This school will build a curriculum around students career interests and for these boys, it's hip hop music.

At this point, it's easy to think that the boy's main problem is a lack of male presence. While a poor relationship with their dad is a crucial part of the story (because little is more important to young men than their relationship with their dad) there is an abundance of men supporting these boys. Manga Man, a local record shop owner is their surrogate dad and manager. School administrators, business people and musicians all work with the boys to help them finish their education while they begin a hip hop career. Despite all that is being done to help them, the boys manage to maintain rather surly attitudes.

Almost too quickly, the boys release a successful CD. While they don't get the glamour and bright lights that most Americans expect, they do begin to get attention and realize they have to surround themselves with people they can trust. They've been educated about the music business and are aware of contracts, obligations and all the work involved with maintaining success. They are also well read on hip hop, knowing its origins, messages and format. They want to be true British hip hop stars. The down sounds of the industry are presented, as the boys are dangerously used just for the money they generate. This bit of suspense is good for moving the story along.

I didn't really like these boys. I was glad to see them successful and did see them grow up a little bit, but they were not developed enough for me to understand and accept them. I would like to think that young people can be successful without having to limit their development by focusing on a career that may or may not be successful and I found their poor attitudes towards every adult unjustified. I do think the story will give young people a lot to consider and more than that, it will give them hope of succeeding with their own dreams.

Important information that every women needs to know...

Ms. Bonnie Kaye's Man Readers is a book that every woman in the world needs to read whether you are single, dating, or married to a man. Ms. Kaye addresses the need for women to nurture their own self-esteem and sexual esteem. She explains why a woman's need for sexual fulfillment is a vital and necessary part of a woman's emotional and spiritual health. Women are so good at sacrificing their own sexual satisfaction in order to maintain a relationship with a sexually or emotionally dysfunctional man.

The growing number of married/attached men that are posting in online chat rooms and forums that are openly seeking sexual relationships with women and/or men has been disturbing and disheartening to me as a woman. How does a woman protect herself when the man in her life has a secret life? I really feel for the wives of these men, and I began to wonder if they are as unknowing as their husbands' claim they are. Right now on several forums are threads posted by men entitled: "Happily married but bi-curious" or "married man seeking another married man for sexual fun...." These men discuss how much it "sucks to have to hide their desires from their wives" or "if my wife knew I was posting here she would kill me...." I worry about the happiness and sexual well-being of these women trapped in lives with men who are obsessed with hooking up with other men. How do women--single and married--protect themselves from these dishonest men?

I want to assert that I do not have any problems with gays and lesbians. I admire their courage to live openly in a society that can and does penalize them for being honest enough to be exactly whoever they are. What I do have a problem with are men that cheat--whether it is with men or women.

Ms. Kaye profiles not only gay/bisexual men that are married, but other types of dysfunctional men that prey upon women with low self-esteem. Also, she outlines how to spot if your man is cheating and ways to track his cyber life. Through 30 plus years of experience counseling women in toxic relationships, she has learned what works in terms of therapy, and how a woman can free herself from a dysfunctional marriage. This is not a book that bashes men. It acknowledges that there are many wonderfully, emotionally and sexually healthy men out in the world that are waiting to meet you--the woman you were always meant to be. However it won't happen as long as you are trapped in a living a lie. If you suspect your man is cheating, read this book, arm yourself with the knowledge to protect yourself, and find the courage to step out in the world. I believe in the courage and resiliency of my fellow womankind. Take care of yourself and remember that you are not alone.

Another great book from Bonnie!

I love this book. Bonnie has a kind and loving heart for women like me who were faced with the unexpected turn of events of finding out their husband was secretly leading life as a gay man while living a lie as a heterosexual husband. Bonnie does not bash men, or anyone for that matter. She provides strength, insight, love and support to so many women at a difficult time and gives them courage to be strong as they rebuild their lives. I am a strong again because of Bonnie and I am a better mother and emotionally healthy after my divorce. Thanks for having the courage to write this book and for the time you dedicate for helping thousands of women nationally.

More than you might expect

Very impressive book. My initial impression was that this would be another competently researched book on tarot & it's history, I soon realised that it is a lot more. This is one of the most concise histories of modern westen occultism that I have found. Even though it's not broad in scope the leval of detail is impressive. The history of Tarot is thorogh & well presented but the background on Occult orders was unexpected. Groups like the Golden Dawn & the Hermetic Brotherhood of Luxor are covered with enough detail to merit this being rated as a good general history of Occultism. The Church of Light & Manly Hall are treated with good biographical essays on the central characters. Even though I have been reading about these people & groups for many years I learned much new information here.

This is not a "how to" Tarot guide book but just as it says, a history. It establishes the personalities, places, & groups necessary & goes on to develop the story better than I have see it done elsewhere.

Excellent must-have reference.

An excellent reference volume. A little too much time is spent on the explanation of Kabbalah and ceremonial magic for my liking - would like to have read even more biography of folk like Madeline Montalban and Rolla Nordic - but this is just a personal quibble. Dummett and Decker (particularly) are to be congratulated on their efforts. This book is a must-have for all serious tarot enthusiasts.

Why don't these guys like Dion Fortune?

This is a comprehensive survey of Tarot cards from 1870 to 1970. Also provided is considerable information on many occult groups of this period. It is helpful that lesser known individuals and groups are covered. Serious Tarot students will find the information valuable. I am puzzled by the authors’ lopsided picture of Dion Fortune. They write her The Mystical Qabalah ‘contributes nothing to the theory of Tarot.’ Well, it’s about Kabbalah, not Tarot ( though they both overlap). In the late 1930s Dion had three exceptional occult novels published: The Winged Bull, The Goat Foot God, and The Sea Priestess. They authors dismiss these as ‘occult romances.’ These novels make a significant contribution to occult understanding. In each one a man and a woman undertake occult rituals to invoke god forms such as Pan and Isis. One gets the impression Decker and Dummett are not occultists.They say Dion became 'extremely fat.' Why make this comment? I don't recall them remarking on the weight of anyone else in the book. Dion Fortune was one of the leading occultists ever.

About the Author

Mark Cameron is an associate professor at Southern Connecticut State University. He holds an MSSW and PhD from the Columbia University School of Social Work. He teaches generalist practice and his scholarship has been in the areas of community violence, school discipline, social work practice education, and the common factors approach.
