-----------------EXCERPT--------------------
Josephus was waiting for it and the moment he felt her start her orgasmic spasms, he let go of her breast and pushed two fingers all the way into her wet vagina as far as they would go using them to lift her trembling form from the ground and take her weight off her jittery knees exactly as they gave out from under her. Her feet dangled, beating the air in helpless spasms as she slumped forward toward him. He still had the index finger in her mouth and as he felt a powerful shudder coarse through her lithe form, he pushed his hand all the way back down her throat and triggered her gag reflex. He saw the sudden surprise as it blossomed in her jet-black eyes as her throat spasmed, gagged and then suddenly she threw up.
He angled her body away from himself, one hand balancing her lower jaw between his thumb and forefinger, the other-supporting the brunt of her weight with the fingers in her cunt. He lifted her convulsing and semi-catatonic body up and tossed her helpless form into the bed.
She immediately curled up, her coughing and shivering, raspy sobs mingled with whimpers.
"Why did you do that? This is horrible," she whispered as she fought to control the dissipating spasms.
"Breathe. Take a few deep breaths, slave. You still have much to learn," he kneeled to wipe his fingers in her dress that lay by his feet. He patiently waited as her breaths found their natural rhythm and her body relaxed on the bed.
"Stand up, slave. You had your fun. Now it's time to repay the favor."
"I hate you," her voice came as a raspy whisper from where she had buried her head in the pillow. "I don't want to do this!" She sat back up on her heels in the bed, her perky breasts shaking and wet with mucous as her eyes cast daggers at the naked soldier who stood by the foot of her bed and insolently stroked his monstrous erection. "I’m a free Roman. My father was a patrician. I'm no slave. You have no right to treat me like that!"
"I agree, little Roman girl," he took a languid step toward her and she scurried farther away across the futile barrier of the tiny bed. "You are not a slave, I am. You are here because you chose to be here. I am here because I have to."
He smiled, beautiful white teeth glinting in the sharp morning light. "You are free to go. This is your chance — go now and you will be free. Go back to your nice husband and your small farm with its little animals and large debts." Josephus rolled his shoulders and stroked his dick in anticipation. "Enjoy them."
Josephus leisurely sat on her bed.

The Idirans fought for their Faith; the Culture for its moral right to exist. Principles were at stake. There could be no surrender.

Within the cosmic conflict, an individual crusade. Deep within a fabled labyrinth on a barren world, a Planet of the Dead proscribed to mortals, lay a fugitive Mind. Both the Culture and the Idirans sought it. It was the fate of Horza, the Changer, and his motley crew of unpredictable mercenaries, human and machine, actually to find it, and with it their own destruction.

An appetizer to the Culture
By Metalcastr
After reading all the Culture novels, it's time to do a review on each one. This is book 1 of 10.

Let's start with The Culture: Extremely advanced utopian conglomeration of pan-humans, aliens, and machines enjoying all life has to offer facilitated by the most advanced AI's in the galaxy. There's many goings-on.

Consider Phlebas is the first of the Culture series, and I feel the most experimental. Banks shows us the peace-loving Culture at what they subsequently consider the worst part of their history, during a galactic war with aliens who are bent on domination. This book shows you the Culture through the eyes of an outsider, which is why this review is titled "An appetizer..." as the Culture is much broader than is stated in this novel. The main character has their own agenda and doesn't like the Culture very much. This causes some friction.

This book is not the best one of the series in my opinion, however it gives you an introduction to the Culture and the events which shape discussion throughout the rest of the series. There's many interesting plot points and situations that the main character gets into, of different varieties. One feature I appreciated about this book, is how it takes place in the far future, however does not alienate the reader with unexplained strange terms or technologies. In addition, people still behave like people, have human thought-processes, and are relatable. This is not to say there isn't unique, interesting, and enjoyable strangeness. Some will tell you to skip this book, or start with another. I'd say read them in published order for an interesting experience. Before beginning this series, I had no idea what to expect, however the rave reviews from fellow Sci-Fi fans brought a copy to my door, and led to reading all 10 books in succession (or Excession??).

Next up is the second book, "The Player of Games" which really starts getting into the Culture, its wonders, and a smaller than galactic-scale but still interestingly thorny issue.

Intriguing world, dull as dirt characters
By TThor
This is the first of the Culture series I've read; from all I've heard an reviews of the other books I know this is one of the weakest in the series, so I don't fault the series as a whole, but it did take me a while to finally get through it.

The thing I like about this book, and what drew me to the series, was the high concept worldbuilding; I find the Culture fascinating

Things I *didn't* like about this book: The author likes to really go into long detail on seemingly needless details and segments, so much so I regularly found myself shouting at the book "Get on with it!"; I get it, it is world/atmosphere building, but I can only take so much of it before I just get *bored* and put down the book. The plot as a whole goes on similar passive, needlessly long tangents, again I found myself going "I don't care about any of this, get back to the interesting main plot!"

Second thing I didn't like: I didn't like nor care about most any of the characters. Many of them just seems so stupid and one-note; On the plus side they seemed relatively realistic in their behavior, but realistically stupid nontheless. By the end of the book I felt completely indifferent to their struggles and accomplishments.

Don't Fear Culture
By G-Dexter
I've long been aware of Iain M. Banks, who is held up by some as one of the legends of modern science fiction, but until now I've hesitated to dive into the Culture books for reasons I can't quite put my finger on. I think I've been somewhat intimidated by the sheer number of books in the catalog and the mountainous amounts of information I would need to absorb to fully understand "the Culture." But finally I decided to jump in and determined that starting with the very first book in the series would be the best approach.

After a brief prologue, we were immediately introduced to the main character, an alien agent who finds himself in a very sticky situation, and his Culture nemesis. Through a James Bond like series of events, the agent escapes and a galactic scale quest began. So far, so good - a likable character set into a series of adventures in the line of duty that put him in far flung, exotic locations with interesting companions and mysterious enemies. This promised to be an entertaining story. But as the story moved forward, the situations became more and more improbable and the solutions became more and more ludicrous. Instead of having a well considered plan of action, our main character, (who I was never quite sure was the actual hero of the book) seemed to blunder from one situation to the next, relying on guile, brute force or sheer dumb luck. Even more perplexing was the notion that his band of galaxy-wise compatriots - thrown in with him mostly by trickery and happenstance - would bow to or continue to follow his leadership.

The environments that Banks created were diverse and fascinating; from intergalactic war ships to luxury ocean cruisers, a massive man-made ring world complete with tropical islands and mini-continent sized icebergs, to an isolated icy world where the mission ultimately led. The backdrop for the story is a massive galaxy wide war in which it was difficult to decide who the good guys really were. The characters ranged from highly partisan to fiercely neutral, which makes for some interesting dynamics. Despite some flaws and the overall randomness, the story was well paced and never less than entertaining - though sometimes in a train wreck sort of way.

While I was expecting a hard science fiction tome - with the density, depth and complexity of a John Le Carre novel, the actual story was more of an Indiana Jones in deep space. That's not necessarily a bad thing - I enjoyed the book for what it was and I'll look forward to reading more of Banks' Culture novels.

The Gender of Crime introduces students to how gender shapes our understanding of every aspect of crime. Moving beyond criminological theories and research that have often neglected gender, this dynamic and provocative book shows that gender is central to the definition, prosecution, and sentencing of crimes, that it shapes how victimization is experienced and understood, and that it structures the institutions of the criminal justice system and the experiences of workers within that system. Discussing the intersections of race, class, gender, and sexuality with crime and punishment, this book demonstrates that crime, victimization, and crime control are never generic—they are instead produced and experienced by gendered (and race, and classed, and sexualized) actors within contexts of social inequality. This book highlights key concepts for students and encourages them to think critically through a range of compelling real-life examples, from school violence to corporate crime. The Gender of Crime provides essential reading for students of gender, criminology, and criminal justice alike.

Review
Dana Britton offers a critical and thought-provoking examination of how criminology as a discipline has largely ignored the intersections of various social inequalities in individuals’ likelihood of engaging in crime or being victimized. . . . The Gender of Crime provides a nice example of the ways in which the intersections of gender and other master statuses can be understood in a variety of social arenas, but particularly in the CJS. In addition to being well-referenced with current and classical criminological, sociological, and legal literature, Britton’s book is extremely well-written and can be appreciated by advanced scholars, students, those who work in the field of corrections, and even those with a general interest in the issue of crime and its root causes. There is much to learn from Britton’s insightful presentation of the criminal enterprise as a highly gendered, racialized, classed, and often sexualized realm of social life. (Sex Roles: A Journal of Research 2011-09-08)

This treasure-trove of evidence and insights about gender and crime in the U. S. offers a disturbing picture of the dynamics of criminalization, crime victimization, and the kinds of people (and entities, e.g., corporations) that are prosecuted (or not) for committing crimes. Britton exposes as false many widely-accepted myths about gender and crime (e.g., women and girls have become more violent, law enforcement officers' chivalry accounts for women's lesser arrest and incarceration rates) and continually reminds us that race/ethnicity, social class, and sexual orientation as well as gender are implicated in crime commission and society's responses to it. On every major issue, Britton's review of competing explanations of empirical patterns (e.g., rape rates, homicides) is even-handed; for example, she contrasts feminist explanations with others to explore their differing assumptions and claims. This profoundly sociological book urges readers to focus on social contexts when seeking to understand how crime is 'constructed' by society (legislatures, the courts). A comprehensive, insightful, well-documented analysis, Britton's book is an invaluable resource that will both inform and prompt debates in coming years. (Patricia Yancey Martin, Daisy Parker Flory Professor of Sociology Emerita, Florida State University)

Dana Britton's The Gender of Crime is theoretically sophisticated, examining the topics of import for teaching students to think critically about the relations of gender, race/ethnicity, sexuality, class, and inequality with crime and justice. In addition to its thorough research coverage, throughout Britton uses concrete examples to make key concepts readily understandable. It's just the text I've been waiting for! (Jody Miller, professor of criminal justice, Rutgers University)

The author of the widely-heralded At Work in the Iron Cage, has brought readers another carefully crafted, meticulously researched, and thoughtfully argued book. In The Gender of Crime, Dana Britton turns a gender lens on criminology, offering clear and nuanced explanations and examples of how gender (as well as race, class, and sexuality) shape the commission of crime and our responses to it. Britton also exposes the biases within criminology that, to date, have prevented us from recognizing the influence of masculinity or the criminal acts of the government and corporations. This book also soundly debunks persistent and damaging myths about crime, such as the ideas that female offenders are liberated or hyperviolent, that rape is a rare event committed mainly by strangers, and that women and men participate equally in intimate partner violence.Britton's lucid and even-handed explanations make this an excellent resource for anyone interested in the study of crime. The Gender of Crime presents a compelling case that addressing the problems of crime and the criminal justice system demand that gender (as well as race and class) be fundamental considerations, not incidental ones. (Jeanne Flavin, Fordham University; author of Our Bodies, Our Crimes)

This book comes at just the right time: at this historical moment, when girls and women are increasingly visible in media images of crime and the criminal justice system; when there is a growing body of scholarship on the nexus between law, crime and the criminal justice system, on the one hand, and gender, on the other hand; and when the demand for (and importance of) understanding more about this nexus is at an all-time high. The Gender of Crime draws on both classic and contemporary theoretical and empirical scholarship as well as provocative real world examples and illustrative cases to systematically reveal how law, crime, and criminal justice are gendered through and through. Moving seamlessly from how gender is encoded in law, to the gendering of law breaking and attendant victimization, to the structure and operation of the criminal justice system, Dana Britton systematically applies a gender lens on criminology. Treating gender as a multifaceted phenomenon―as a social characteristic, a process and mechanism, and an outcome and manifestation―she skillfully reveals the multitude of ways in which gender operates to shape the context of crime, the perpetration of crime, the victimization associated with crime, and the institutions charged with managing crime. The result is clear: the value of this book for academics, advocates, and policymakers is beyond question, precisely because it is synthetic without glossing over important frameworks and findings; it is readable without betraying the complexity of the nexus between gender and crime, and scholarly without being 'just academic.' (Valerie Jenness, University of California, Irvine; President-Elect, Pacific Sociological Association)

Drawing from social and historical contexts, as well as theoretical works and empirical research, The Gender of Crime offers a nuanced account of the relationship between gender and crime, and is distinct in its intersectional focus. The book is not a simple review of similarities and differences in women and men’s crime and victimization. A key contribution of this book is its ability to illuminate understandings of offending, victimization, criminal justice system responses, and occupations within gender, race, sexuality, sex, and class contexts through a wide-ranging review of related research and theory. (ASC Division on Women and Crime)

Britton (Kansas State Univ.) offers a succinct and important treatment of a complex issue, leading off with an assessment of criminology as a discipline, discussing the historical ignorance and denial of gender, and moving toward more recent trends in the treatment of the issue. She then addresses women as offenders, as victims, and as employees and workers in the criminal justice system. An additional chapter explores the issue of gender as it is generally manifested in the criminal justice system overall. Britton makes good use of a slender volume. Her writing is crisp and succinct; when the numbers get unwieldy, she supports her thesis with graphs and tables. She addresses the topic of gender and crime in an elegant manner. Readers are not bludgeoned with superfluous detail or distracted by unnecessary repetition of points that have been adequately argued. The text is substantial enough to be of use to graduate students while avoiding the common issue of being so dense that it is not accessible to the typical undergraduate. (CHOICE)

The Gender of Crime introduces students to how gender shapes our understanding of every aspect of crime. This dynamic and provocative book shows that gender is central to the definition and prosecution of crimes, that it shapes understandings of victimization, and that it structures the criminal justice system and the experiences of its workers. The book highlights the intersections of race, class, sexuality and gender with crime and introduces students to key concepts through compelling examples.

The Org: The Underlying Logic of the Office, by Ray Fisman, Tim Sullivan

We create organizations because we need to get a job done--something we couldn't do alone--and join them because we're inspired by their missions (and our paycheck). But once we're inside, these organizations rarely feel inspirational. Instead, we're often baffled by what we encounter: clueless managers, a lack of clear objectives, a seeming disregard for data, and the vast gulf between HR proclamations and our experience in the cubicle.

So where did it all go wrong?

In THE ORG, Ray Fisman and Tim Sullivan explain the tradeoffs that every organization faces, arguing that this everyday dysfunction is actually inherent to the very nature of orgs. THE ORG diagnoses the root causes of that malfunction, beginning with the economic logic of why organizations exist in the first place, then working its way up through the org's structure from the lowly cubicle to the CEO's office.
Woven throughout with fascinating case studies-including McDonald's, al Qaeda, the Baltimore City Police Department, Procter and Gamble, the island nation of Samoa, and Google--THE ORG reveals why the give-and-take nature of organizations, while infuriating, nonetheless provides the best way to get the job done.
You'll learn:

  • The purpose of meetings and why they will never go away
  • Why even members of al Qaeda are required to submit Travel & Expense reports
  • What managers are good for
  • How the army and other orgs balance marching in lockstep with fostering innovation
  • Why it's the hospital administration-not the heart surgeon-who is more likely to save your life
  • That CEOs often spend over 80% of their time in meetings-and why that's exactly where they should be (and why they get paid so much)

Looking at life behind the red tape, THE ORG shows why the path from workshop to corporate behemoth is pockmarked with tradeoffs and competing incentives, but above all, demonstrates why organizations are central to human achievement.

"...a compelling new book....The book offers telling insight on a topic that has ebbed and flowed across the world over the last 30 years, as governments of all stripes have set out to privatize state-owned enterprises and outsource services - what does the private sector do better than government, and what does it do worse?"―Eduardo Porter, The New York Times

The Org is a triumph
By Joshua Gans
It is no understatement to say that the business book market is saturated. Most of it is not nearly of the quality that I would comfortably hand or recommend those books to MBA students; which is incredible since MBA students and alumni are invariably the target market for such books. Most of those books steer clear of sensible economic theory and also the use of non-anecdotal evidence which does not help one bit.

But there are books worth recommending and they lie on a frontier. They can be classified along two dimensions. The first is the probability that what is contained in the book is actually correct; which can be high or low. The second is whether the book "makes you think." One dimension does not imply the other. For instance, much of Malcolm Gladwell's writings make you think but have a relatively low probability of actually being correct. Josh Lerner's recent outing on The Architecture of Innovation falls into the opposite camp: it is evidence-based and highly likely to be correct but doesn't put forward a stunning new hypothesis that makes you think. Sometimes one author can provide something in both camps. Tim Harford's The Logic of Life falls into the highly like to be correct camp while his recent book Adapt, falls into the make you think camp. Sometimes a book hits both marks such as Nudge or Thinking, Fast and Slow but they are very rare.

The Org by Ray Fisman and Tim Sullivan falls well into the required reading for MBAs set. Indeed, I believe it will be THE required reading on the subject of organisational economics. It seeks to uncover why organisations are, well, organised the way they are. From reporting structures to CEO perks, from culture to the unintended consequences of incentives, Fisman and Sullivan provide a clear exposition of economic theory and relate it to proper, large data-set evidence on organisational operation. For that reason, it falls squarely into the "highly probably to be correct" camp. Moreover, it does this by framing the theory and evidence around stories that are themselves grounded in highly detailed case studies. There is no cuteness here, just on-point exposition of how offices work.

The trade-off for being rigorous is that you do not get to put forward a speculative hypothesis about the evolution of organisations and the way managers should manage in the future. Instead, there is a resignation to the world. Yes, to be sure, organisations can be annoying but Fisman and Sullivan want you to understand that there is a silver lining to your frustration and in most cases you should just suck it up. That is not an inspiring message but it can make you more comfortable with the status quo. And let's face it, there is nothing more frustrating than some manager trying to re-organise things based on some new fangled and probably wrong managerial theory. In that way, The Org provides the fodder for those who want to ground decisions in evidence and gives them the perspective to push back on debates that might lead to costly excursions.

So I think every MBA student is going to be handed this book and it will become a classic staple of management education. But what about the rest of us? Is this worth reading? The answer is a qualified yes. It is beautifully written and the stories themselves, especially if you are not a teacher of organisational economics, are fresh and should be part of your own knowledge. But in terms of interest my belief is that if you like Downton Abbey, then you are going to appreciate your time with The Org. Now it may seem a stretch to draw a line from a British TV soap opera about 1920s aristocracy to a book on organisational economics but, in fact, both sit on the same foundations. Downton Abbey, at its core, is a rationalisation of a particular -- I guess almost feudal -- organisational form and all the intricacies of the power structure, information flows (including gossip) and response to external pressures that that organisation takes. The Org provides the same picture but just for a more modern set of organisations. They are two sides of the same coin.

You have to accept the org as it is
By David Wong
I have to admit, I'm just a lowly cubicle dweller who got angry, frustrated and confused all at the same time about the prevalence of dysfunctions in my org, so I hoped to get some inspiration or explanation as to the reason of my daily sufferings with this book.

The book in general is smoothly prosed and made for a pleasant reading. I found a lot of interesting anecdotes, and there were explanations for many facets of organizational phenomenons. But the general flow of the books appears rather superficial and (this may just be my personal feeling), apologetic -- there are so many wrongs and dysfunctions an org can have, but this is already the best in all possible worlds. There was little discussion about what can be done to correct the dysfunctions, or how org can be improved in general.

Quoting from the penultimate chapter of this book, "If there's one message to take away from this book, it's that a glass half full may be the best you can hope for." A rather depressing thought to the interchangeable cogs-and-wheels of the org indeed.

Can't Live with them; Can't Live Without Them
By bronx book nerd
This book had an ambitious and audacious goal but fell somewhat short of the target. Rather than reveal new insights, it is actually a rehash and mishmash of a lot of already existing knowledge about the purpose and limits of organizations. If you are not versed in these, there is definitely some value in it. However, a lot of it is old hat: measuring performance can be a double-edged sword, for example. People will focus on what you measure to the possible detriment of other meaningful things. People will also game the system, and give you a lot more of what you're measuring than you would otherwise get, but causing possible harm. The classic example of this has become tracking the length of calls at call centers, resulting in brusque encounters between customers and call takers. Another example is the trade-off between centralized and decentralized organization. Both are needed at different times. You can't give too much freedom or you can lose control, but you also need to allow room for creativity and initiative. These are a couple of examples of the yin and yang of organizations, why you can't live with them and can't live without them. The biggest lesson learned from this book is that all organizational decisions and strategies come with trade-offs and compromises, and that there is no perfect way to organize, and that the way you choose today will need to change before you know it.

Like Precious Faith
By BL
KEH

Hunted this type of Faith all my life. 2nd Peter 1:1 opens with "Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ:" 'like precious faith' is rare and precious, indeed.
KEH has 'like precious faith' because he not only teaches the Word, but urges us to study it for ourselves. It is precious to find a Bible scholar who doesn't try to dominate, but knows 2 Cor. 1:24 "Not that we lord it over your faith, but we work with you for your joy, because it is by faith you stand firm." Two things I value: 1) To know for myself. 2) To be respected as an equal believer and not 'talked down to' by a leader.
KEH lifts us up in Christ: Luke 22:69 "But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God." Glory to God!

Not like other devotionals at all!
By bookworm
Usually, I don't like devotionals. I find them watered down and full of obvious thoughts. But this one is an amazing book, packed each day with a scripture, how to apply it and a story to back it up. I can see that he talks from a lot of experience and has more experience in this topic than most people today, even though the author lived in a time where this type of talk was not so popular.

If you like stories or Christian biographies, I think you will really like this book. If you are sick, praying for the sick or know someone struggling with a sickness that makes you doubt if you really believe God will heal or if your faith is strong enough to push through.. I can't recommend anything better!

What a wonderful, well written, encouraging book.
By Amazon Customer
Thoroughly enjoy this! What an encouragement, and reminder we just need to take hold of that which was purchased for us at the cross. Healing is ours already, we are not the sick trying to get well, we are the well (blessed) and the devil is trying to make us sick (sift us out, take us down) (credit KCM ministries). I enjoy how the devotion was written. Love that I can have available on my phone for those minutes of down time, and anywhere!

Van Gogh's Bedrooms, by Gloria Groom, Louis van Tilborgh, David J. Getsy, Inge Fiedler

A fascinating look at the genesis and meaning of Van Gogh’s famed paintings of his bedroom

Vincent van Gogh’sThe Bedroom, a painting of his room in Arles, is arguably the most famous depiction of a bedroom in the history of art. The artist made three versions of the work, now in the collections of the Van Gogh Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Muse d’Orsay. This book is the first in-depth study of their making and their meaning to the artist.

In Van Gogh’s Bedrooms, an international team of art historians, scientists, and conservators investigates the psychological and emotional significance of the bedroom in Van Gogh’s oeuvre, surveying dwellings as a motif that appears throughout his work. Essays address the context in which the bedroom was first conceived, the uniqueness of the subject, and the similarities and differences among the three works both on and below the painted surface. The publication reproduces more than 50 paintings, drawings, and illustrated letters by the artist, along with other objects that evoke his peripatetic life and relentless quest for “home.”
