This Is the Real Deal - Don't Accept Imitations
By JasonD
A description of the item first. This is published by YAMAHA music media and is TWO books. The larger book contains music for a piano accompaniment along with the Alto Saxophone music above it for EACH song. Very Awesome. There are 25 songs total and a music CD is included that has a digital keyboard accompaniment for each song as well as a tuning tone as the last track. VERY AWESOME AGAIN!! The second book is only the Alto Sax music but it opens flatter than the big book and is great for setting on a music stand. All of the writing is in what I assume to be Japanese, but music is an international language and the seller provides a very nice translation index along with the book. Without this it would be impossible for me to have figured out what was in the book.
I got this for my teenage daughter's birthday and she was fighting back tears when she opened it and saw that it had all her favorite songs. This is by far the nicest book available; there are other books that say Alto Sax Studio Ghibli but I would not recommend buying anything other than this book. The quality of this book would be very hard to beat. Includes Songs Nausicaa Valley of the Wind - Opening Song, Castle in the Sky - Innocent (Carrying You), My Neighbor Totoro - My Neighbor Totoro, Sampo (Promenade), Cat Bus, Path of the Wind; Kiki's Delivery Service - A Seaside Town, Departure, On a Clear Day, Beginning the Job, When Embrace in Tenderness; Porco Rosso - Time of the Cherries; Whisper of the Hear - Take Me Home, Country Road; Princess Mononoke - Princess Mononoke, Ashitaka's Myth, Ashitaka and San; Howls Moving Castle - Merry Go Round of Life, Promise of the World; Spirited Away - Always Dream the Same Dream We Love, Day of the River, Again; Tales from Earthsea - Song of Terhu; Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea - Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea; The Seacret World of Arrietty - Arrietty's Song; From Up On the Poppy Hill - Summer of Goodbye/From Up On the Poppy Hill.

Great!
By RissaLeigh
This book is great! I mean, it's in Japanese, and I can't read Japanese, but I knew that from the beginning. There is a paper inside that has the names on the songs in English and Japanese and they're in order, I love it. I'm listening to the CD now, I can't wait to play this music! I've loved Studio Ghibli since I was a kid.

The Age of Openness: China before Mao, by Frank Dikotter

The era between empire and communism is routinely portrayed as a catastrophic interlude in China's modern history. But in this book, Frank Diktter shows that the first half of the twentieth century was characterized by unprecedented openness. He argues that from 1900 to 1949, all levels of Chinese society were seeking engagement with the rest of the world and that pursuit of openness was particularly evident in four areas: governance, including advances in liberties and the rule of law; greater freedom of movement within the country and outside it; the spirited exchange of ideas in the humanities and sciences; and thriving and open markets and the resulting sustained growth in the economy.

Review
"'In this succinct and vigorous book, Frank Dikotter presents a cornucopia of graphic examples to show that China in the first half of the twentieth century, far from being in a state of decay that called for revolutionary action, was in fact a vibrant and cosmopolitan society. In such a reading, the current Chinese leaders should not be seen as striving to do something bold and new; they are merely struggling to rebuild a network of global connections that Mao and others had systematically helped to destroy. This should be an ideal book to spark class discussion on modern China.' - Jonathan Spence, author of The Search for Modern China and Return to Dragon Mountain 'The always innovative Frank Dikotter infuses new life into an historical period left by most historians for dead - China's republican era from 1912 to 1949. In his persuasive recounting, this cosmopolitan, dynamic era has more to tell us about modern China's long-term trajectory than the authoritarian interlude that followed it.' - Andrew J. Nathan, Class of 1919 Professor of Political Science, Columbia University"

History on one side of the coin
By NeverneverLand
I actually wrote a much longer review of the book, but duh, my internet explorer had a bug, the review disappeared, so I'm left rewriting another review.

To summarize what I originally wrote, I lauded Diktter for a succinct, well told book on China's history of 1900-49. It is not verbose, and the book flows along nicely. He is clearly intending to present a "revisionist" idea of 1900-49 China as being progressive and open, as can be seen from the titles of the four main chapters: open governance, open borders, open minds and open markets. In "Open minds", he even lauds some Chinese intellectuals from being progressive. Diktter is clearly anti-Marxist in presenting his ideas that the 1900-49 era before Mao might well be one of the most open and progressive societies China has ever seen.

Diktter's book is well written and presents a cogent argument. But is it the whole picture? A Chinese living in 1900-49 might see things somewhat differently, as I would offer to suggest:

1) Wen I-To, China Democratic League poet, political activist, was murdered by Nationalist agents in 1946. It is an openly acknowledged fact recognized both inside and outside China, by orthodox historians even in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Europe and the USA. His crime was openly criticizing the Chiang Kai-shek's Nationalist regime during Li's funeral after the KMT secret agents assassinated Li Gongpu, another fellow party member and democrat. Note that both Wen and Li were democrats and not communists.

2) The 1900-49 "age of openness" followed a period of insularity and extreme conservative backwardness that was perhaps the most serious in China's history up till that point. Lots of reading materials availing in the 1900-49 should have been long made available in the late 19th century.

3) Movies in the late 1930s and 1940s prior to the Communist takeover didn't paint as golden a picture as Dikotter does of that era. 1937's "Crossroads" depicts college students committing suicide due to massive unemployment. 1949's "Crows and Sparrows", made just before the Communist takeover, paints a very critical picture of Shanghai-ruling Nationalists indiscriminately killing intellectuals.

4) Lu Xun, China's pre-eminent intellectual then, opined the 1911 revolution was a failure. Incensed at the March 18 student massacre, he exiled himself to Amoy and then to Shanghai (note Lu Xun was primarily a liberal who had leftist leanings, but never identify himself with the communist party). James Reeve Pusey's "Lu Xun and evolution" (p 154) quotes Lu Xun as saying: "I left Guangzhou in 1927 speechless by the blood." He also said, in 1925, "I feel the so-called Republic of China has ceased to exist. I feel that, before the revolution, I was a slave, but shortly after the revolution, I have been cheated by slaves and have become their slave".

5) Louis Cha, wuxia novelist now in Hong Kong, studying in Chongqing in his youth, once recalled the Nationalist school he attended kept drumming into students that "Yue Fei (a Song Dynasty Chinese patriot and General) was politically short-sighted", apparently because they wanted to sell out some parts of China to imperial Japan. Cha criticized the school's autocracy, landing him with an expulsion.

6) Hou Hsiao-Hsien' "A City of Sadness" (1989) paints a very different picture of the Chiang regime. The White Terror era of 1945-9 was a terrible memory for many Taiwan natives. Hou won the Venice Golden Lion in 1989 for this film. Yonfan's "Prince of Tears" (2009) recounts a similar story from his childhood memories. [...].

Part of Diktter's argument holds water. China in 1900-49 was immensely more open than in the late 19th century under the disintegrating Qing dynasty rule. Yet he doesn't put this the proper context: yes, while it was true, one must also acknowledge the period before was probably the most backwards in the whole of China's history, where she was virtually isolated from Western imperialist powers and the rest of the world (save for Shanghai and a few ports).

Seen from this perspective, plus other certain facts, one can tell Diktter is telling one side of the story, quite selectively. But the other side of the coin? Eyewitnesses' accounts from that period don't exactly endorse an "age of openness" where people (Lu Xun, Wen, Li, Cha - the last still alive) could be murdered in the streets for opposing the dominant political party, or in late 1940s-50s Taiwan (Hou and Yonfan grew up there), where massacres still existed under General Chiang Kai-shek.

A bold attempt to reconstruct the history of China in the first half of the twentieth century
By Hubert Shea
Professor Dikotter from the University of London has collected and analysed abundant secondary literature to dispel the widely-held belief that the history of contemporary China between the fall of the Qing dynasty in 1911 and the rise of communism in 1949 was an age of political, social, and economic turbulence. According to him, the history of the Republican China represents an unique age of openness in which internationally diverse cultures were everywhere, ranging from coastal cities to the rural hinterland. This 6-chapter book aims at demonstrating that China in the first half of the twentieth century was in fact vibrant and cosmopolitan, particularly in four key aspects including governance, borders, minds, and markets.

The Nationalist Party is portrayed by Professor Dikotter as a staunch advocate of western democracy, penal administration, and judicial reform in both national and provincial level instead of being a fragile and corrupt political party. Due to political patronage and protection from foreigners and regional governors (P.25), freedom of publication and association proliferated to sustain democratic debate. People from all walks of life acquired a global outlook and travelled beyond China. Many of the Diaspora and indigenous Chinese were bicultural and bilingual with polyglot knowledge (P.60) and they became more influential in arts, religion, politics, business, education, and philanthropy. Besides, Chinese society was more cosmopolitan with huge presence of foreigners in treaty ports such as Shanghai and Tianjin. Professor Dikotter has posited that foreigners were powerful agents that contributed to the flows of "people, goods, technologies and ideas" (P.51) between China and the outside world.

The meaning of openness in the Republican China can be represented by proactive participation into international political affairs such as the First World War, the League of Nation and the Hague Court. Moreover, economy was more international with phenomenal growth in foreign trade and innovations in money and finance. A more open and prosperous market also enormously induced high growth and change in transportation and material culture (P.89).

Professor Dikotter concludes that China under Mao was a radical reversal of being openness to international connections but the Republican China had witnessed an "unprecedented intensification" (P.100) towards openness. The Open door policy in the Communist China since 1978 can be interpreted as a mere rebuilding of international connections that had occurred in China since the first half of the twentieth century. This book is not lengthy and Professor Dikotter provides readers with fresh insights into the history of contemporary China. However, his view towards the Republican China certainly leads to fierce debate, particularly from politicians and historians in mainland China who might find it difficult to accept his view that the openness experience of the Republican China period can be of greater relevance to China nowadays.

The World Conquerors: The Real War Criminals, by Louis Marschalko

WORLD CONQUERORS expresses some of the bitterness and contempt of enslaved Europeans for the rulers of the ‘‘victorious nations.’’ It shows that by being urged to throw off the German yoke, the central European nations were tricked into becoming satellites of the Soviet. WORLD CONQUERORS indicates the real war criminals. It gives horrifying glimpses of the agony behind the Iron Curtain and describes the plot to extend the slave system to the Western world. Thousands of copies of the Hungarian edition have been sold and this English translation is published to warn the West. It is written by one who is a firm friend of the English-speaking people but an implacable foe of their vacillating and corrupt governments.

Controversial, but interesting
By S. Swink
Louis Marschalko - a Hungarian nationalist - published this book book in 1958. "The World Conquerors," surveys the worldwide advance of communism from a decidedly Catholic perspective. The author's argument is that communism is a worldwide movement, promoted everywhere by the same worldwide, transnational force.

In four chapters relating to WWII, "The Real Victors of the Second World War", "Revenge is Ours", "New Purim and Nuremberg", and "What Has Become of Six Million Jews?", Marschalko proves himself a one-man Institute for Historical Review.

The Clearness of Marschalko.
By Paul Wasa
Mr. Marschalko does a good job in exposing the poisoning mind of the Jews worldwide.
He's very well documented and has a very clear insight on things gone by. He analyzes the 2nd World War regarding the Jews and draws the most logical conclusions.
A book not only worth of being read, but I should say " a must " for younger people, who know nothing about WWII but from Jewish books and Jewish propaganda films, most of them untrue or biassed.

Paul Wasa.

Truth Before It's Time
By john thames
Long before the Holocaust denying Institute for Historical Review appeared on the scene, Louis Marschalko, a Hungarian, wrote a definitive expose of the six million myth in the context of a book exposing world-wide Jewish conspiracy. Remember, the book was published in English in the late 1950's and got everything right long before its time. Although there are a few mangled quotations and slight errors of fact, Marschalko saw through the fog of propganda long before organized revisionism appeared on the scene. It is a remarkable book - and one still worth reading if you can find it.

About the Author
Kristen Ashley grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana, and has lived in Denver, Colorado, and the West Country of England. Thus she has been blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her posse is loopy (to say the least) but loopy is good when you want to write.

Kristen was raised in a house with a large and multigenerational family. They lived on a very small farm in a small town in the heartland, and Kristen grew up listening to the strains of Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon, and Whitesnake.

Needless to say, growing up in a house full of music and love was a good way to grow up.

And as she keeps growing up, it keeps getting better.

Disappointing
By Amazon customer
I was very surprised by this book, because not much happens. The beginning was very exciting, High and Millie "crashing" into each other, etc, after all these years, so much emotion, (I was holding on for epic, here!) but then once they got together, the only "excitement" going on was if High's bratty youngest daughter would ever stop being mean to Millie. Oh boy. Like many other reviewers, I did not like the reason for Millie breaking up with High all those years ago. ***SPOILERS AHEAD!****** All the flashbacks (and there were many which began to sound and feel the same - so many were about the photos that were taken of them, etc) told us what a perfect couple they were from the beginning, passionate, in sync, etc. So her breaking it off with him and him just accepting it made no sense to me. I kept waiting for more. But there was no more, and it wore very thin. Then all that was transformed into "Milie's great sacrifice." Eye roll. It was just BS to me. Also everyone constantly repeating the title of the book..( yep, we got it! ) became really annoying and overdone. And her sacrificing their happiness and love, so he could have "real kids" with another woman (gulp) was also a big NO to me. Just left a sour taste in my mouth the whole way through.

Also, all this time Millie has never " bumped into" High like she does in the first chapter at the fast food place and now she does 20 years later and suddenly she must find him and explain her reasons for dumping him? Really? Suddenly she must explain all to him. So where does she go to find him??? The biker bar they all used to go to and then a biker rally/concert weekend. Seriously? That was just so unreal to me. If she is the serious, logical woman she is portrayed to be, why would she hit up these very public party venues where all the club members are bound to be to go have a "this is why I broke up with you 20 years ago, gee I'm sorry" discussion with the love of her life????!!?? This just seemed like a convenient way to throw in some biker atmosphere and memories for her of the places they used to go to as a happy biker couple.

The huge thing that really baffled me and bothered me was the juvenile way everyone was behaving. The Tyra "got to get involved" shenanigans, Hop's mean song at the nightclub with everyone there...are we in high school?? Nope, so all this was really silly. And no, I don't believe that a woman like Millie didn't have another relationship or that she slept with no one in all those 20 years++. Then why did she walk away from High for?? And everyone including Millie blaming High for treating Millie badly for all the revenge s*x in the beginning was really stupid and immature to me too, of Millie and everybody.

There's plenty of talk about brotherhood, etc, but there's no mc action whatsoever. They patrol their neighborhood for the most part, and yet they consider themselves "outlaws." Okay. For the 3rd Chaos book in a row (since Hop's story, I believe)...Benito the Baddd Guy is mentioned and we get all geared up for-- finally!!-- a big clash and even Tabby's fallen on bad times best friend who is working with the bad guys is mentioned yet again...but really, nothing happens. I did like that Shy's ex Rosalie is in the picture here. Yep, Millie gets kidnapped, and no I don't mind that happening, I got excited for about a minute there. But even that was uneventful and lacked any wow. Yes, the club got all upset and angry over one of their old ladies being taken of course, but the police come in and save the day (huh??) and the club backs down. Of course there is a new plot on the rise here for the next book...one of the bros is going undercover to get Benito. We shall see...at this point, I don't expect very much.

Otherwise the book is mostly about High's daughters getting along or not with Millie. And uh, that's it. Elvira was fun, Malik was nice. Quick visit with Brock and Mitch. Hi Shirleen! The other thing that I found odd was High's ex wife. Yes, it was really nice not to have the typical bitchy mean ex-spouse making things crazy for our new couple and the kids involved, Deb is unruffled, not jealous at all, not a passionate person who needs romantic deep love in her life, okay, but she comes off as being totally NEUTERED and flat. She does likes very expensive designer handbags though, so she's cool! SO once again, the ex is an oddball, no one for us to feel slightly jealous over (phew! High is redeemed!), not just a normal partner in a previous relationship that didn't work. Eye roll again.

Suddenly after so so so much kitchen sink soap opera drama, the book was over. And I almost thought I'd missed something... like a real story. But I was very very surprised (to the point that I even checked back in the book!) that with all the flashbacks, there was no flashback of their infamous breakup. Why not?!? It seemed like it was coming, but it never did. So much was made of it, how shocking and explosive it was, and I was very much looking forward to it..especially now that we knew about Millie's great "sacrifice." I wanted to see High's fury and struggle and all his pain AND Millie's, and why he didn't fight her on it. That was very very strange to me and very lame for such a long winded book. In the end this was an unsatisfying read, which left much to be desired. A lot of oomph, both emotional and action wise, was lacking for me, and I was disappointed.

Read the 3 star reviews. KA fans who didn't like this book still love KA and gave her 3 stars.
By M Segan
This book should have been included in Kristen Ashely's "Fantasyland" series. As much as I wanted to like this book I just couldn't buy into the story. It felt like a total fantasy. The world that KA created felt unrealistic and fake. Who would act this way? The 'secret' that Millie had that caused her to break up with High was so stupid that I couldn't believe anyone would ruin their life over that. It just seemed such an over the top melodramatic reaction. And the fact that High who loved Millie more than life and who knew, just KNEW they were meant to be would walk away after one argument and not even fight for his own happiness? I could barely keep reading because it started to feel like I was reading about a book that takes place in Wonderland. It took me out of the story so many times that I just started shaking my head and kept on reading. What was wrong with these people?

Not Believable
By 30 Book A Month Reader
Kristen Ashley was a recommendation to me by another great author - Jacqueline Rhoades. Never listening to Jackie again, because that recommendation has cost me several hundred dollars while I worked my way through Ashley's backlist. Lol. By discovering Ashley, I opened a whole new world of badass alpha anti-heros, girly girls who are determined and hard-headed with crazy situations. I have to admit that author Ashley is now one of my favorites. All that said, "Walk Through Fire" was a total yawn for me. One of the beauties of Ashley's romances is her ability to make you BELIEVE. The dialogue is often overwrought, too emotional and even crazy, but you read it and you believe it. I found the romance between High and Millie to just not be believable. From flashbacks into the past, Kristen Ashley succeeded in showing me the deep love and caring between her two characters - a love SO deep that it would be unthinkable to not share the big secret Millie had with High. It just wouldn't have happened. Real love - true love - the kind Ashley creates would have had the two characters staying together even if one was paralyzed and their face destroyed, so the secret that Millie carried was just not a believable plot device. I'm sorry, when I can't believe, I can't become emotionally invested or involved in the story. Others may disagree with me, but I found this plot device and the way it developed to be pretty lame.

An Objectivist Guide to the Mystery Religions
By Don G. Schley
In an era when subjectivism has swept through the study of the humanities and social sciences, reinterpreting the past with the specific aim of influencing the present, the reprinting of Willoughby's often overlooked 1929 masterpiece represents an act of real integrity and courage on the part of the publisher. Today, Elaine Pagels and a host of other revisionist scholars and writers, mostly from Ivy League schools, raise the late second- and early third-century a.d. cult of Gnosticism to a place of historical pre-eminence over primitive Christianity. In doing so, they are attempting to convert this late-developing post-Christian cult into the true historical Christianity. The republication of Willoughby's important 1929 work from the University of Chicago, however, from an era when historical thinking was objective and not subjective, provides modern researchers with a classical historical distillation of precisely those religions which probably did, in a profound way, influence the form that Christianity adopted in the classical world.

That is to say, Christianity came out of Judaism, a communitarian religion based on the three factors of national identity, adherence to an ancient monotheistic law code, and strict observance of both public and private sacrificial rites. Yet Christianity came into the world almost from the start as a religion of personal salvation and spiritual transformation. The proper antecedents to this aspect of Christianity are to be found outside of Judaism in the Greco-Roman mystery religions, which provided the hope of spiritual and moral transformation through secret rites--i.e., mysteries--which brought an inductee into direct union with the deity.

Using classical historical methodology during a period at which American universities such as the University of Chicago were rising to world-class stature, Willoughy writes a profound expos of these religions. In doing so he relies heavily on a wide variety of ancient primary sources. His work thus reveals what can be known of the mysteries and secret rites of these ancient religions--probably the first historical religions of personal salvation--from all manner of classical texts, including court testimony.

For instance, Willoughby recounts a special court case that reveals 1) the extent to which the knowledge of the external aspects of the mysteries were know in the wider culture, and 2) the seriousness with which the laws of the mysteries were taken in official Roman jurisprudence. In this case, Willoughby notes that a death sentence befell any member of the Eleusynian mysteries (the cult of the ancient Greek Goddess of the harvest, Demeter) who revealed the contents of the mysteries. Here, Caesar Augustus, himself an inductee into the Eleusynian mysteries, on hearing a case of murder in the context of one of the Eleusynian initiations, dismissed all others from the courtroom and took the testimony himself from the witnesses. Such vignettes bring the reader face-to-face with the painstaking steps Willoughby has taken to bring home the reality and prevalence of the mystery religions in Greco-Roman society.

In contrast to the books written on this topic today, Pagan Regeneration is devoid of any overt or covert religious or political agenda (unlike the works of Pagels and others) and thus can be used with integrity as a work of scholarship. In addition, the book is extremely well-researched and well-written, and the student or scholar of religion can easily employ Willoughby's work as a critical source in modern historical study. No other work of this caliber has ever emerged on this subject.

Accordingly, I recommend Pagan Regeneration to anyone seeking an objective, textually based presentation of the Greco-Roman mystery religions. It is informative not only for the Greco-Roman world itself, but for the development of Christianity along certain lines, the origins of which are not readily apparent today. I bought my copy for $1 at a used book sale over 30 years ago. Today, I see it can be worth up to $150. At $30 or so, the reprint is a real value.

Early Greek Philosophy, Volume III: Early Ionian Thinkers, Part 2 (Loeb Classical Library)From Harvard University Press

The fragments and testimonia of the early Greek philosophers (often labeled the Presocratics) have always been not only a fundamental source for understanding archaic Greek culture and ancient philosophy but also a perennially fresh resource that has stimulated Western thought until the present day. This new systematic conception and presentation of the evidence differs in three ways from Hermann Diels’s groundbreaking work, as well as from later editions: it renders explicit the material’s thematic organization; it includes a selection from such related bodies of evidence as archaic poetry, classical drama, and the Hippocratic corpus; and it presents an overview of the reception of these thinkers until the end of antiquity.

Volume I contains introductory and reference materials essential for using all other parts of the edition. Volumes II–III include chapters on ancient doxography, background, and the Ionians from Pherecydes to Heraclitus. Volumes IV–V present western Greek thinkers from the Pythagoreans to Hippo. Volumes VI–VII comprise later philosophical systems and their aftermath in the fifth and early fourth centuries. Volumes VIII–IX present fifth-century reflections on language, rhetoric, ethics, and politics (the so-called sophists and Socrates) and conclude with an appendix on philosophy and philosophers in Greek drama.

Boasting equal parts scholarship and style, "All Governments Lie" is a highly readable, groundbreaking, and timely look at I. F. Stone -- one of America's most independent and revered journalists, whose work carries the same immediacy it did almost a half century ago, highlighting the ever-present need for dissenting voices.

In the world of Washington political journalism, notorious for trading independence for access, I. F. "Izzy" Stone was so unique as to be a genuine wonder. Always skeptical -- "All governments lie, but disaster lies in wait for countries whose officials smoke the same hashish they give out," he memorably quipped -- Stone was ahead of the pack on the most pivotal twentieth-century trends: the rise of Hitler and Fascism, disastrous Cold War foreign policies, covert actions of the FBI and CIA, the greatness of the Civil Rights movement, the horror of Vietnam, the strengths and weaknesses of the antiwar movement, the disgrace of Iran-contra, and the class greed of Reaganomics. His constant barrage against J. Edgar Hoover earned him close monitoring by the FBI from the Great Depression through the Vietnam War, and even an investigation for espionage during the fifties.

After making his mark on feisty New York dailies and in The Nation -- scoring such scoops as the discovery of American cartels doing business with Nazi Germany -- Stone became unemployable during the dark days of McCarthyism. Out of desperation he started his four-page I. F. Stone's Weekly, which ran from 1953 to 1971. The first journalist to label the Gulf of Tonkin affair a sham excuse to escalate the Vietnam War, Stone garnered worldwide fans, was read in the corridors of power, and became wealthy. Later, the "world's oldest living freshman" learned Greek to write his bestseller The Trial of Socrates.

Here, for the first time, acclaimed journalist and author Myra MacPherson brings the legendary Stone into sharp focus. Rooted in fifteen years of research, this monumental biography includes information from newly declassified international documents and Stone's unpublished five-thousand-page FBI file, as well as personal interviews with Stone and his wife, Esther; with famed modern thinkers; and with the best of today's journalists. It illuminates the vast sweep of turbulent twentieth-century history as well as Stone's complex and colorful life. The result is more than a masterful portrait of a remarkable character; it's a far-reaching assessment of journalism and its role in our culture.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Stone (1907–1989), the man behind I.F. Stone's Weekly and a congenital prober behind official facades, remains enormously relevant today, in an era of too much journalistic acquiescence. MacPherson (Long Time Passing) hasn't written a conventional biography——as her subject left no private papers—but has woven in a study of the press (especially establishmentarian Walter Lippmann) and "Stone's running commentary on twentieth-century America." A child of Jewish immigrants, Stone (born Isador Feinstein) was, according to a friend, driven by insecurity and curiosity. A newspaperman for decades, he became "an eclectic craftsman," with a reformist and intellectual bent; even at 19 he quit a job to chase the Sacco and Vanzetti execution. "Izzy," as he was called, emerges as a challenging, complex fellow, an ebullient workaholic adored by his wife. Columnist and reporter, on the left but a self-described nonconformist, Stone issued sound judgments on the Holocaust and the Cold War, yet, the author allows, could be too willing to give the Spanish Loyalists and the Soviets the benefit of the doubt. Near the end of his life, Stone taught himself ancient Greek and wrote The Trial of Socrates, a hit. But his legacy was earned by a willingness to read documents in depth and apply his eclectic, passionate intelligence—and MacPherson brings all this to life in this terrific and timely book. (Sept.)

From Booklist
*Starred Review* With painstaking research, MacPherson offers a penetrating look at one of the nation's most respected journalists and a tour de force of five decades of challenge to the principles of press freedom in a democracy. A man of astonishing energy and intelligence, Stone began his career at 15 as editorial writer in 1923 for the Philadelphia Record and later the New York Evening Post. He went on to write for the Nation, PM, and his own I. F. Stone's Weekly. Suffering poor vision and eventual deafness, Stone eschewed coziness with high-placed sources, relying instead on meticulous research and low-level government workers who had a better feel for what was actually happening. A descendent of Russian Jews, Stone was born too late for the height of the radical socialist era but maintained progressive ideals and was highly skeptical of government policies. He opposed Joseph McCarthy's Red-baiting, the Vietnam War, and FBI surveillance of citizens. He himself was a lifelong target of the FBI. MacPherson chronicles the internecine strife on the Left during and since the cold war era, with Stone battling away at the excesses of capitalism. Interviews with friends, family, and colleagues offer a personal look at a complex man: demanding, prickly, passionate, and iconoclastic. Vanessa Bush

Review
"At last! Myra MacPherson has offered us the definitive life and times of the most independent journalist of our epoch -- I. F. Stone. Known as Izzy, he revealed to us in his tiny four-page weekly not the 'objectivity' of the Official Word but a hard truth from the bottom up. This book may become a classic: it is mandatory for all young journalists."

Inspiring story of a true journalist watchdog
By Dr. H. David Prensky
I had been looking forward eagerly to All Governments Lie, Myra MacPherson's thorough study of I.F. Stone's work and times. I had a deep personal interest in the project and confess to being absolutely delighted with the results.

I mention a deep personal interest and the reasons for this are many. For starters: I am a contemporary and there aren't too many of us left. It is true that he was 10 years my senior but still we shared depression and war and cold war years. I can't say that we knew each other, although we did meet on a few widely scattered occasions, but I did attend his school, The University of Pennsylvania. There in his home town of Philadelphia, I moved in circles that included relatives and friends with whom he had grown up. That enables me to say that I had a good second hand acquaintance with him.

I introduce myself in this manner to justify the comments I am about to make about the book. I confine myself to just one area of the book's treatment of the life of the man the author calls "the rebel journalist". I felt warm satisfaction in the way she swept into the garbage pail the ludicrous charge that Stone was guilty of espionage for the Soviet Union. She is convincing on the subject and reminds us of what should put an end to this baseless gossip. The F.B.I. never found one shred of evidence, and it was not for lack of trying.

J. Edgar Hoover was a stubborn, determined man when he had a hated target in his sights. He despised Stone to the point where he had made up his mind to get rid of him. To him the Stone threat was in the same class as those of Martin Luther King and Albert Einstein and we recall the viciousness and relentlessness of his attempts to ruin them. On the matter of the espionage smear, I can state with warm satisfaction now, because of this book: "Case closed!"

On a related theme, Ms MacPherson demonstrates a level of insight and understanding not always displayed by writers discussing her book. She comprehends, as they do not, that one had to have lived through the epoch to realize how it was possible to have taken pro-Soviet stands in the 1930s and '40s. With the hind sight of this century one can sneer at one who was so blind as to be taken in by Joseph Stalin. But for one who lived through the period, and Ms. MacPherson did not, I am in a position to make some points on this.

Those of us who lived during those years with our eyes and ears open, were aware of the threat that soon developed into the nightmare of World War II. We saw in Mussolini's invasion of Ethiopia and Hitler's various menacing moves what the world would be faced with if measures weren't taken. Yet it was only the Soviet representative at the League of Nations during the mid to late 30s, Maxim Litvinov, who stood up and made the much needed accusations and called for collective security. The Italian and German n delegations walked out and the representatives of the great democracies remained cowed and silent. Let me add to this the shameful memory of the Spanish Civil War and the so called Non-intervention Committee. Only The Soviet Union and Mexico came to the aid of the legitimately elected government of Republican Spain.

Many highly respected people wrote admiringly of the Soviet Union, from the muckraking journalist, Lincoln Steffens, to Beatrice and Sidney Webb to Ambassador Joseph E. Davies to the saintly Hewlett Johnson, Dean of Canterbury Cathedral.

If you weren't there then, it's easy to look back now and ask: "How could he not have known?" Well, Myra MacPherson wasn't there then, but she has the insight to reveal the situation that existed and to explain the way decent people lined up.

This book is a must reading for younger generations who know so little about these times.

You Don't Have to Agree with Him
By C. Kurdas
With the hindsight of several decades, it is easy to poke holes in I.F. Stone's writings. Yes, his notion of combining a free society with socialism was utopian. Yes, his economic arguments tend to be wooly in the extreme. Yes, he was wrong in denying the Soviet connections of some of his communist friends. Stone's books stay fresh despite those mistakes because he was right about a lot: governments, racism, wars.

He was so right that what he says about the cold war and Korea and Vietnam provides insight into the wars America wages today. Beyond the light he sheds on specific events, Stone offers an alternative model of journalism. His journalism, based on a close reading of all sources, is independent of the powers that be. Today's news reporting is dominated by the hypocrisy of the "he said, she said" model: include a counter-quote and the story supposedly becomes neutral. Stone was not politically neutral, but he was independent and truthful. He did not regurgitate the received view. He would not have fallen for the addled rationales that skewed public opinion in favor of starting the war in Iraq.

MacPherson's biography is a great way to get to know the irrepressible, fiercely intelligent and marvelously funny Izzy--a man who retains his curiosity and innocence even as he fights against injustice and idiocy and is beset by malignant bureaucrats and scheming politicos. It's not about his private life, but the book does bring the man to life.

Through Stone, one understands American history with all its grandness and squalor, in ways rarely available from history books. MacPherson has done a service to the Republic in bringing together this mass of material and preserving the memory of an outstanding American. Anybody who cares about the country should read it.

A book for smart people!
By Joseph Cowart
I.F. Stone, a great reporter, told the truth to power without giving it a second thought. Would that the current crop of investigative reporters had done the same. This book, beautifully written by former reporter Myra MacPherson, through ten years of interviews and research, puts Stone in context to his times, and will make you wish there was such a person watching Washington today.
