A classic textbook with an excellent discussion of a number of topics--especially ferroelectrics

When I took my undergraduate solid state physics course in the mid 1970's, Kittel's textbook was in its fourth edition--at which point it had become more of an reference book rather than a primary textbook that addressed a number of topics in a reasonably complete way. Looking at Kittel's first effort at such a book, my father in law's copy, reveals a substantially different approach. The topics covered in this first edition of Kittel, which includes elastic constants, lattice vibrations, thermal properties, dielectric properties, ferroelectrics, magnetism, band theory, semiconductors, and impefections in solids, are discussed in a reasonably complete fashion. Of course this text is dated somewhat. For the classic topics that I have listed, however, it is still quite useful. It is also amusing to read that the transistor (which is also treated in this book) is also referred to as "a crystal triode". I should also note that its chapters on dielectrics and ferroelectrics are excellent. In fact the introduction to ferroelectrics is best that I have ever read!
